HISTORIC FARMSTEAD CHARACTER•1%ofthecounty’sfarmsteadsliewithintheDistrict.Suchlow

percentages are historic; farmsteads have always been absent from Cannock Chase which covers large proportions of the northwesternquarteroftheDistrict.Elsewherefarmsteadshavebeenlostasaresultofindustrialandurbanexpansioninthe20thcentury.

•SmallandmediumscalefarmsteadsdominatetheDistrict(59%)andhavebeenassociatedwiththoselandscapeswhichwereenclosedoutofCannockChaseatanearlydatenotablyaroundCannockWoodandtothesouthinandaroundLittleWyrley.Historicallytheywereassociatedwithasubsistenceeconomywherebythoseworkinginindustry(particularlycoalmining)wouldsupplementtheirincomeswith part-time farming

•ThelandscapetotheeastofCannockandwestofRugeleyrepresentedamixofcourtyard,dispersedandlinearfarmsteadtypes,althoughlargenumbershavebeenlostfromthelandscapearoundCannock.

SIGNIFICANCEFarmsteadswhichhaveretainedtraditionalbuildingsand/ortheirhistoricformmakeapositivecontributiontolocalcharacteranddistinctiveness,whethertheyaredesignatedasheritageassetsornot.Thegreaterthesurvivalofthehistoricformanddetailofthewholefarmsteadandanybuildings,thegreaterwillbeitssignificance.

Theheritagepotentialoftraditionalfarmsteads,basedonthesurvivaloftheirhistoricformfromOrdnanceSurveymapsofc.1900,hasbeenenteredontotheStaffordshireHistoricEnvironment Record (HER).

•24%ofrecordedfarmsteads(countyaverage59%)havehighheritagepotentialastraditionalfarmsteads,becausetheyhaveretainedmorethan50%oftheirhistoricform.

•9%(countyaverage9.5%)havesomeheritagepotentialbecausetheyhaveretainedlessthan50%oftheirhistoricform.

Theremaindermayhaveretainedahouse(whichmaybealistedbuilding)orhavelostalloftheirbuildings.Thesemaystillretainarchaeologicaldepositswhichcanberevealedthroughdevelopment.

PRESENT AND FUTURE ISSUESResearchledbyEnglishHeritage(seetextboxonfirstpage)hasshownthathistoricfarmbuildingshavebeenmoreproneto both neglect and development than any other historic buildingtype.Theyarealsoassociatedwithhighlevelsofhome-basedbusinessuse.

TRADITIONAL FARMSTEADS IN EAST STAFFORDSHIRE BOROUGH

HISTORIC FARMSTEAD CHARACTER•17%ofthecounty’sfarmsteadsliewithintheDistrict.•Large-scalefarmsteads(36%)arerepresentedinlowdensitiesacrosstheDistrict.Largeregularcourtyards,however,areparticularlycharacteristicoftheNeedwoodplateau.ThisisahighlyplannedagriculturallandscapedominatedbyregularfieldsystemsandstraightroadswhichwascreatedfollowinganActofEnclosure(NeedwoodForest)passedin1801.Thisareaincludesahighproportionoflandscapeparks.

•Small-scalefarmsteads(43%)arealmostentirelyabsentfromthe area of the former Needwood Forest. They are associated with those landscapes enclosed from woodland in the medievalperiodtothesouthofUttoxeterandtothesouthofHanbury.Theyarealsopresentinhighdensitiesaroundthesmall settlements to the north and west.

•RegularL-plans(13%),associatedwithdairyfarming,areparticularlyconcentratedwithinorontheedgeoftheDovevalley,itstributariesandtheupper(northern)stretchesoftheBlitheanditstributaries.Theyarealsofoundtothesouthof the District within and on the edge of the Trent Valley and itstributariesincludingwithinoradjacenttoareasofhistoricwater meadows.

SIGNIFICANCEFarmsteadswhichhaveretainedtraditionalbuildingsand/ortheirhistoricformmakeapositivecontributiontolocalcharacteranddistinctiveness,whethertheyaredesignatedasheritageassetsornot.Thegreaterthesurvivalofthehistoric

formanddetailofthewholefarmsteadandanybuildings,thegreaterwillbeitssignificance.





PRESENT AND FUTURE ISSUESResearchledbyEnglishHeritage(seetextboxonfirstpage)hasshownthathistoricfarmbuildingshavebeenmoreproneto both neglect and development than any other historic buildingtype.Theyarealsoassociatedwithhighlevelsofhome-basedbusinessuse.•17%offarmsteadsitesretainingworkingbuildingshaveoneormoreconvertedbuildings.

In this area these farmsteads are particularlyassociatedwithplannedenclosure.

•Thegreatestnumbersofsmall-scalefarmsteadslieinthelandscapetothesouthandsouthwestofthecityofLichfieldinlandscapesdominatedbypost-medievalirregularfieldsystems.

•RelativelyhighnumbersofregularcourtyardL-plans,oftenassociatedwithdairyfarming,alsosurvivefairlyevenlyacrosstheDistrict(20%).

•FarmsteadsarelargelyabsentinthewestandaroundLichfieldwhereurbanexpansionhasbeenhighest.

farmsteads tend to be associated with hamlets or form looseclusters,withonlyasmallnumberformingisolatedfarmsteads. Farmsteads are now largely absent to the east oftheDistrictduetourbanexpansionandformerextractiveindustrialsites.

•Small-scalefarmsteads(38%)includinglinearplans,dispersedclusterplansandloosecourtyardplanswithworkingbuildingstoonlyoneortwosidesoftheyardslightlyoutnumberthelarge-scalecourtyardfarmsteads(35%).Thefarmsteadsareassociatedwithamixofplannedandirregularfieldpatterns.

•20%ofthefarmsteadsaredefinedasregularcourtyardL-plansandareconcentratedtothesoutharoundAshleyHeath/LoggerheadsandtothenorthbetweenAudley/Balterleyandthecountyboundary.Thesefarmsteadsareassociatedwithsmall-scaledairyingandareparticularlycharacteristicoftheBorough.
