the College’s Alumni & Parent Relations office.

BREAK-EVEN EVENTS
Generally speaking, events that break even in terms of cost are simpler to plan logistically
and can be ready to promote more quickly. They also require less promotion lead time,
because of the limited financial exposure involved.
The costs of the events represented here were fully covered by attendee registration fees.
Where noted, an alumnus or trustee helped to obtain a venue or attraction at a reduced
price or at no cost.

FLAGSHIP EVENTS
Flagship events represent our highest quality Regional Chapter programs, and they are
usually more complex logistically. They should be planned 4-6 months in advance and
promoted 2-3 months in advance, to allow F&M Friends ample opportunity to participate.
The events represented here required funding beyond the income generated by registration
fees to pay for space rental, faculty travel and other large costs.
The cost of these events were covered by a combination of PEP Award funding, attendee
registration fees, financial contributions from the Alumni & Parent Relations office and
contributions from alumni and trustees (where noted).
PEP (Premier Event Programming) awards are made available by the Alumni Association
Board’s Chapters Committee through an application process. Alumni Association Board
members who serve on local Chapter Councils and staff of the College’s Alumni & Parent
Relations office can assist local Chapter volunteers in applying for this funding.

and Dizzy Gillespie. He formed his own trio in 1961 and followed with the release of multiple record

Paul Weinstein '53 came to a love of jazz early in life. As a child in the 40's, he and his father enjoyed
Sunday concerts by jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller at New York's Town Hall. Later, in
the 60's, he was a regular at the well-known jazz showcase, Dick Gibson's Colorado Jazz Party, and a
lifelong avocation was born. Paul began producing jazz parties of his own in the 60's, including the
"Heavenly Jazz" series that ran for three decades. Paul also brought jazz to F&M in the 70's with concerts
including musicians like Al Cohn, Zoot Sims and Joe Venuti.

This year, our gathering will take place at the Boston
Pops' seasonal venue, Tanglewood, in Lenox, Mass.
Before the concert we will enjoy the company of F&M
friends and delicious desserts at a private reception in
Tanglewood's Formal Gardens tent. Coffee, wine, beer
and cold beverages will also be available.
Then we will move to the Koussevitzky Music Shed to
hear one of the greatest jazz vocalists of our time
accompanied by the Pops in an outstanding musical
program.
Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall began
studying piano at the age of four. Encouraged by her
pianist father, she was performing in restaurants by the
age of 15 and was ultimately awarded a scholarship to
the Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years
at Berklee, she moved to Los Angeles and eventually to
Toronto, where she signed with her first label. In 1993,
Justin Time records released her first album, Stepping
Out, and the rest is history.

A Christmas Story, The
Musical!
with Private Reception and Cast
Meet & Greet
America's #1 Christmas movie comes to life
on stage as a hilarious holiday musical, A
Christmas Story, The Musical!
Premiering nationwide at the Hershey
Theatre and produced by the film's original
Ralphie, Peter Billingsley, this holiday
classic will entertain the whole family. Join
F&M friends for a delightful holiday
experience, including a private dessert
reception before the show and an exclusive
meet-and-greet with the cast.
Based on the writings of radio humorist
Jean Shepherd, A Christmas Story, The
Musical! chronicles young, bespectacled
Ralphie Parker as he schemes his way
towards the holiday gift of his dreams -- a
Red Ryder Action Air Rifle BB Gun. ("You'll
shoot your eye out kid!") A kooky leg lamp,
outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a
maniacal department store Santa, and a
double-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole
are just a few of the distractions that stand
between young Ralphie and his Christmas
wish.

Join us for an exhilarating evening of jazz featuring legendary trumpeter Jon Faddis and guitarists Gene Bertoncini and Howard Alden. This musical program is being produced by Paul Weinstein '53, and it's an experience you won't want to miss. We will begin with a wine and cheese reception at 7 p.m. followed by musical sets at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Jon Faddis is known as the greatest jazz trumpeter of his generation. He began playing the trumpet at the age of 8, inspired by the performances of Dizzy Gillespie, with whom he was collaborating by his mid-teens. He has played live and in studio with many of American music's greatest artists including Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra. He performed at the White House in 1982 at the age of 29, and his horn was also heard on the theme of the "Cosby Show."
Gene Bertoncini is one of today's pre-eminent jazz guitarists. He has performed with musical greats including Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich and Tony Bennett. Bertoncini honed his skills as a member of Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" band and has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
Howard Alden began playing the guitar at the age of 10, inspired by the music of Benny Goodman and Count Basie. He has performed with the likes of Woody Herman, Bud Freeman and Dizzy Gillespie. In 2004, Alden was the guitarist and musical director for a 50-city concert tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival.

School Masterworks from the Metropolitan
Museum of Art and Select Private Collections
Join us for a memorable program led by American Studies
Professor David Schuyler, a delicious brunch catered by
award-winning Jimmy Duffy's and a tour of the
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts' current exhibit of
Hudson River School paintings. Professor Schuyler will
discuss the history and context of these stunning
masterworks, and he and several PAFA docents will be on
hand to share their insights as part of the exhibit
experience. Brunch and tours will take place in PAFA's
historic landmark building, opened in 1876 for our nation's
Centennial Exposition and World's Fair.
Public Treasures/Private Visions is a rare opportunity to
see paintings that seldom travel outside of New York City,
as well as paintings from superlative select private
collections of Hudson River School art. The Hudson River
School is one of the most influential traditions in the history
of American landscape painting. Ranging from grand
visions of the American West to quiet forest interiors,
American painters absorbed the traditions of European
landscape artists and reinvented them to celebrate the
distinctiveness of the vast American landscape, and created
new art for a new land.
