Weber Road Church of Christ Sharing God’s Word with
Corpus Christi & the World
Will This Be a Time of Growth? The Weber Road Church of Christ places great emphasis on our Bible classes and worship each week. Of course, worship and study are vital and necessary to our Christian faith, but there is much more to being a follower of Christ. Remember that Christians in the first century were involved daily with one another. Acts 2:46-47, “And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” Weber Road has been a church family who, for many years, encourages this type of faith. This fall, there will be many opportunities to grow in faith and service. Here are a few of these events in random order:
• Young Men and Ladies Training Classes
• Bible Study and Marking Classes
• Ladies Classes Wednesday Mornings and Evenings
• Weekly Bible Bowl Studies (with Bible Bowl in November)
• Teen Service Projects
• Monthly Area Preachers and Men’s Luncheon and Devotional
• Activities for Our Children and Their Families
• October Gospel Meeting with Wayne Jones
• Mother, Daughter and Ladies Banquet in November
• An Active Classics Program (Senior Ministry)
• Opportunities to Attend Gospel Meetings at Area Churches of Christ
• A Variety of Great Bible Classes on Sundays and Wednesdays
• Other Events and Activities for Growth, Fellowship and Service
We hope that every member of the Weber Road Church of Christ will be involved and invite others to do the same. We also extend an invitation to study with anyone who wants to know more about salvation and how God wants us to obey Him. Let’s strive to be a congregation who takes Jesus’ words seriously. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15
Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

It’s heartbreaking to see some of the things going on in our country. As we look back on US history, there have been many times when similar things have occurred. Think back to mobs during the time of the American revolution, bitterness after the Civil War, crime during the prohibition era, unrest during the Great Depression, violent civil rights protests, large city riots of the 1970’s, and many other times when our citizens have not been able to get along and behave themselves in a civilized manner. Then, we like to place the blame! It’s the fault of the President, the police, a political group, a religious organization, a certain race of people, or someone else. Rarely do we blame ourselves for problems that our country faces.
Here is a fact: We will always be divided to some extent and on some level in this country and in the world! NO ONE will ever unify us, unless it is done through Jesus Christ. Not Donald Trump, not Barak Obama, not any politician, not any media personality, not any religious leader, not any of mankind’s ideologies or movements! Jesus was referring to those things that would occur before the destruction of Jerusalem and these will obviously continue until the second coming of Christ. “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” Matthew 24:6-7 (ESV)
One important point that should be made is that it is time for every Christian to begin to act and speak like Christ! With the advent of social media, it is so easy to post and forward articles and statements that provide more wood for the fires of bitterness, contempt and hatred. It’s about time for all faithful Christians to share a message that Jesus has called us to proclaim and to not be ashamed of. The message is His Gospel of salvation, freedom from hate filled hearts, godly forgiveness, and love. The only message that will change the world in which we live in a concrete fashion is that “Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) Because of what Christ accomplished on the cross and by rising from death, we can have victory through our Lord, Jesus Christ!
While Christians may choose to be involved in political activities and be active on social media, let us remember that it is NEVER okay to do anything that would bring shame to the cause of Christ or to do anything that Christ would not do Himself. The world of the first century was very unfair and cruel to Christ and to His newly established church. Yet, we do not find Christians being encouraged or commanded to act in vengeful or hateful ways. Instead, even in the days of the Roman Emperors, Paul wrote, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” Romans 13:1-2. Also, 1 Peter 2:13-14, instructs us, “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God,
that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.” These may be surprising words to some, but they are words given by God’s inspiration.
Can a Christian be involved in government? I believe that answer it yes. But, a Christian can never be involved in any activity that is a sin or brings shame to Christ. Be careful what you say. Be careful what you post. Be careful what you promote. Be careful what you do. Although we may have rights as citizens of this country, we must remember that our status as children of God and our citizenship in heaven (Philippians 3:20) surpasses all rights we have as Americans. Let the following words dictate what you do as a Christian: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2
