1) il+être+adj.+de+infinitive
Il est agréable d’écouter de la musique.- It is pleasant to listen to music.
2) ce+être+adj.+à+infinitive
• C’est facile à comprendre. It’s easy to understand.
• C’est difficile à dire. It’s difficult to tell.
3)ce+être+noun+de+infinitive
• C’est une erreur de bavarder pendant le cours.- It’s a mistake to talk in class.
“il” and “ce”
• The forms with “ce” are more frequent than with “il” in modern spoken French.
• Other examples of this structure are:
• C’est indispensable de… It’s essential to…
• Il est nécessaire de… It’s necessary to…
• Il est permis de…-It is allowed; one may
4)Some common impersonal verbs
• For talking about the weather!! il pleut- it’s raining. il neige- it’s snowing. il grèle- it’s hailing.
Still talking about the weather
• il tonne – it’s thundering.
• il fait beau (temps)- it’s fine weather.
• il fait mauvais (temps)-it’s bad weather.
• il fait froid- it’s cold.• il fait frais- it’s cool.• il fait chaud- it’s hot.• il fait jour- it’s daylight.• il fait nuit- it’s night.
• il se fait tard- it’s getting late.
• il fait du soleil- it’s sunny.• il fait du vent- it’s windy.• il fait de l’orage-it’s stormy.
• il fait du brouillard- it’s foggy.
5)Il faut+infinitive
• Il faut écouter le professeur.- You must listen to the teacher.
• Il faut parler plus fort.-You must speak louder.
6)il faut+noun
• Il faut du courage- it takes courage;you’ve got to be brave.
• Il faut de la patience- you’ve got to be patient.
7)“il est” to express time
• Quelle heure est-il?-What time is it?
• Il est midi moins le quart- It’s a quarter to twelve.
• Il est temps de partir-It’s time to go.
• Il est trop tôt pour l’appeler- It’s too early to call her.
• Il est tard- It’s late.
• C’est trop tard-It’s too late.
8)il y a (there is;there are)
• Il y a une dame dans le bureau- There is a lady in the office.
• Il y a des étudiants dans la bibliothèque-There are students in the library.
• Qu’est-ce qu’il y a? - What’s the matter?
• When used with expressions of time, ‘il y a’ (voici and voilà) serve to express the meaning ‘ago’
Example :
• J’ai fini il y a dix minutes.- I finished ten minutes ago.
• J’ai fini voici dix minutes.- I finished ten minutes ago.
• J’ai fini voilà dix minutes.-I finished ten minutes ago.
