LITURGY OF THE WORD
FIRST READING Isaiah 11:1-4ab
On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a Spirit of counsel and of strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord, and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, but he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land’s afflicted.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 104:30
Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
Psalm 104:1, 24, 27-28, 30-31, 33-34℣. Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, how great you are, How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.
℣. All of these look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it, they gather it up; you open wide your hand, they are well filled.
℣. You send forth your spirit, and they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord lat forever! May the Lord rejoice in his works!
℣. I will sing to the Lord all my life, sing psalms to my God while I live. May my thoughts be pleasing to him. I will rejoice in the Lord.
SECOND READING Acts 8:1bc, 4, 14-17
On that day, there broke out a severe persecution of the Church in Jerusalem, and all were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria, except the Apostles. Those who had been scattered went about preaching the word. When the Apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for he had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
℣. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.
GOSPEL John 14:23-26
Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will
send in my name - he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.”
