Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
This year is special for so many reasons, not only is it
the London 2012 Olympics in less than three weeks but
it is also the Queen’s diamond jubilee. Sixty years ago
the Queen was on her honey moon when she was told
the news that her father had died and she was Queen.
Today the Queen is only the second monarch to make
their Diamond Jubilee.
As the patron of Scouting and a big part of our
traditions, many groups from across the district
celebrated the jubilee during an extended weekend in
June. Here is a round-up of some of the celebrations
that members have been taking part in:
1st Cheriton Scout Group held their Diamond Jubilee
party to coincide with their AGM and Jamboree on The
Trail Families and members were all invited to take part
and it also included the annual awards ceremony. 1st
Hythe Sea Cubs also held a party in their headquarters;
they invited younger siblings to join in a fun evening with
games and food.
3rd Hawkinge Scout Group held a very patriotic party
with a fish and chip themed supper. The entire scout
group turned out to hold a street party in their grounds,
with young people making crowns and playing games
before tucking into their food.
In addition to all the parties that have been going on
during the jubilee celebrations, the district was also
represented at the first Folkestone Airshow in 9 years.
The airshow was very successful with over 140,000
spectators viewing it from the Leas, the Red Arrows and
Typhoon was amongst the highlights. A big thank you to
all the young people who turned up to help with the litter
picking and running crafts.

Going for Gold
Congratulations to Zara Groves of 1st Cheriton Scout
Group who was presented with her Chief Scout Gold
award by County Commissioner, Harvey Kennett at a
special presentation in East Malling. Zara was the only
person to attend the presentation in the district; the
Gold award is the highest achievement for a Scout and
shows a big commitment and achievement. So well
done!

Spring Camps
Most scout groups will be holding their camps over the
summer holidays; however 2nd Sandgate cub scouts
and 1st Hythe BP have already held their camps during
the spring holidays.
Unlike most scout groups, 2nd Sandgate take their cubs
to a PGL centre in Sussex. This year the cubs took
part in a number of adventurous activities including
aeroball, fencing along with rock climbing and
abseiling. All the cubs enjoyed themselves and the
coach journey home was peaceful as the week had
been very exhausting!
12 cubs from 1st Hythe BP Cubs attended a camp
during the Spring Half Term at Selsted CEP School.
Cubs achieved their athletes badge and athletes plus
whilst doing a challenge at the Marsh Academy playing
field, on the way back the cubs enjoyed an afternoon
swimming. Later in the week the cubs had a trip to
Wingham Wildlife Park where enjoyed learning more
about the animals.
If you are having a camp this summer then please
contact us, you could feature in the autumn edition!
50 Years and Still Scouting
For those who attended St. Georges Day service at
Brockhill, you will have seen Christopher Herbert MBE
collect his certificate for 50 years’ service. Chris was
acknowledged by the county commissioner, Harvey
Kennett at the district AGM where he was also
presented with a crystal momentum after he stepped
down from the post of treasurer.
We are pleased that Chris has decided to stay involved
with Scouting as our auditor. Sue Baker was elected as
our new District Treasurer at the AGM.
Sea Scouts’ Sponsored Swim
During Scout Community Week in May, several Sea
Scouts from Holy Trinity took part in a sponsored swim.
The young people completed their stages 1 and 2 in
swimming, with some managing to complete their
stage 3. Overall they managed to raise £90.00 in
addition to preparing for water-based activities later in
the year.
Keeping Local This Summer
Why go abroad in 2012 when there is so much happening
close to home. We have already supported the Diamond
Jubilee and next are the London Olympics right on our
doorstep.
If you are not going to camp this summer, then why not try
one of the many free events that are part of the Cultural
Olympiad: It all kicks off very shortly with the Olympic Torch
which is being carried through Hythe and Folkestone on its
way to Dover. It will also go through the service tunnel at
the Channel Tunnel, onto Samphire Hoe where the Dover
Lifeboats will escort the flame to a tall ship. The flame will
also go to the top of Dover Castle. Later in the week, the
flame will travel to Leeds Castle in Maidstone for evening
celebrations.
Also part of the Cultural Olympiad is the Summer Reading
Challenge, Story-Lab. This is a free activity that is taking
place in every Kent Library for anyone aged 5-11 years old.
It starts on Saturday July 14th 2012 and will run until the 2
nd
week in September. You can win medals and lanyards and
take part in some free activities that the libraries are putting
on.
For older children and those with a passion for art then you
can go to the Turner Contemporary where Tracy Emin has
her latest exhibition which is part of the Cultural Olympiad
and free entry. The Boat project will also be in Margate on
July 14th, 15
th and 16
th with music and entertainment as
well.
Away from the Olympics, A Town Unearthed project will be
uncovering a new part of the Roman Villa on 4th and 5
th
August 2012. The organisers will be hosting a medieval
battle along with some activities; there is also the
opportunity to try your hands on some archaeology.
There are a few places of interest which we recommend
you visit: Leeds Castle near Maidstone is a large castle with
great gardens and a long history dating back before the
Tudor era. Also why not go along to the Dover Transport
Museum who has a large collection of buses and trains that
you can get close to and learn more about.
If you would like to win tickets to the places of interest listed
above then why not enter our free competition. Tickets will
grant you and your family access to the locations for one
day.
Sand Sculpture Contest
In June, five scout groups from across the district entered
a sand sculpture competition at Sunny Sands beach in
Folkestone. Despite the wind, it was sunny and turned out
to be a pleasant evening; no one else was on the beach
which made the competition much easier to run.
Sculptures came in all kinds of sizes and were judged on
a point scoring system. There were volcanoes, castles,
lost cars but the overall winner was a Japanese fish which
was sculptured by two scouts from 1st Cheriton.
After everyone built their castles, they tucked into a
barbecue which was put on by the district.

notified on the 5th August 2012. This competition is open
to all members apart from those directly related to the
Everyday Scout Magazine team.
Please send your answer, name, age, scout group and

Cooking Competition
Are you keen on cooking? If so then the Folkestone and Hythe Scout’s, Camp Cooking Competition is for you. The task is simple, collect 4 like-minded individuals, plan a 2 course menu, either starter and Main Course or Main course and Dessert, prepare and cook it.
However there is always a catch, you have to provide 5 servings of food for your team mates and the judges, for £4.00 or less. The food must be cooked over an altar fire and lighting the fire is part of the test. There will be different criteria to be applied, based on cost, presentation of the dish, the taste, the different techniques and skills used to produce the dish. You must also be knowledgeable about food storage and hygiene, both indoors and at camp.

Campfire Sausages with Vinegar Onion Gravy The vinegar really cuts through the richness of the sausage to give a fantastic flavour. Serve with plenty of crusty bread to mop up the delicious gravy. Cooking Time: 20 minutes Serves: 4 people
INGREDIENTS 2tbsp oil or 2 small sachets of mayonnaise 8 plump sausages 2 medium onions, finely sliced
1tbsp or 2 small sachets of vinegar 1 beef stock cube 1tbsp cornflour or arrowroot Salt and freshly ground pepper Crusty bread, to serve METHOD
1. Heat the campfire until the wood has burnt down and you have a nice pile of greying ashes and embers.
2. Place a large frying pan on the stand over the fire and add the oil or mayonnaise. Heat until it is bubbling slightly.
3. Prick the sausages lightly, this will stop them from exploding, and place in pan. Brown the sausages gently all over – don’t go mad here, all we want is a nice colour. Once browned, remove with tongs and place on plate.
4. Add the onions to the pan and cook them for about 5-10 minutes or until they soften and colour slightly. Add the vinegar to the pan and cook until it has mostly evaporated. Add 400ml water and the crumbled stock cube, season well and bring to boil. Return the sausages to the frying pan, cover, then cook for 10 minutes or until cooked through.
5. Once the sausages are cooked, mix the cornflour or arrowroot with 1 tablespoon of cold water to form a smooth paste. Gently pour a little paste into the pan and stir it in with the wooden spoon. It should thicken, if the sauce is boiling, straight away. The aim here is to get a nice smooth consistency without being too thick and gloopy. If you add too much of the paste simply add a little water to thin it out again. Season well and serve.

Explorers Get a Flying Start
Two Explorer Scouts from Hawkinge Hurricanes
successfully renewed their promise whilst harnessed to a
climbing wall at the Folkestone Airshow in June. Ritchie
Fraser invested Lizzie and Declan whilst they were
climbing on the tower which had been sponsored by
Sainsbury’s for the event. The unit is now looking forward
to a summer programme and urge anyone interested in
joining to get in contact.
By Royal Appointment
3rd
Hawkinge Cubs wrote a card to the Queen for her
Diamond Jubilee and were amazed when they received a
reply from the Queen’s Lady In Waiting in July. Cubs
designed the card themselves and were very proud of
what they achieved together.
We have created this really useful page so that you know about all the forthcoming
events in the district and in your local area. Although we have tried to list all local
events on here, we may not have covered them all. If you know events not listed then
please contact us and we can add it to our website and in the next edition. If an event
asks for feedback then please mention us to them!
