EUROPEAN REFUGEE CRISIS
Response Dashboard Updated 29th January 2016
The number of refugees prepared to make potentially perilous journeys to flee conflict and persecution is at an all-time high. According to UNHCR 1,015,078 people crossed the Mediterranean in 2015, and more than 54,000 have already made the dangerous journey this year. 856,723 people arrived in Greece since in 2015, compared to 40,000 in 2014. In Italy more than 150,000 arrived last year, including at least 11,100 children who have arrived alone, without any parents or family at all.
In many transit countries there is no management in place in informal camps, with dire conditions in some and inadequate facilities across all. Even the formal reception/ detention centres in many countries lack management capacity and ability to provide access to basic facilities. Children, elderly, female-headed families and people with disabilities are highly vulnerable, with screening and reception facilities overwhelmed.
The vast majority of refugees and migrants travelling to the EU come from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea and Nigeria. The conflict in Syria alone has seen more than four million people flee the country. Often arriving in neighbouring countries unable to cope with the massive influx, many of these refugees choose to continue their journey north and west towards Europe via either the Mediterranean Sea or over land via Turkey and Greece.

URGENT NEEDS
CHILDREN on-the-move, especially unaccompanied children, are at high risk of abuse, exploitation, violence and trafficking as they journey from points of origin to Western European countries.
CHILDREN find themselves affected by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, malnutrition, dehydration and lack access to child-friendly asylum procedures and information.
CHILDREN are in desperate need for psycho-social support, protection, safe spaces, shelter, food, clothes and water.

SAVE THE CHILDREN RESPONSE
Save the Children is ensuring the children are protected wherever possible.
Save the Children is ac8vely coordina8ng with governments, UN agencies and other NGOs to respond to the humanitarian crisis.
We already run programmes across five regions, protec8ng children as they flee alone or with their family and those children who are trafficked or exploited. We work along the whole route that refugees take: we work in the countries they are fleeing – like Syria, where brutal war has ripped apart the lives of millions. We work in countries that are known as ‘transit countries’, those en route, like Turkey, Serbia, Macedonia, Croa8a, Greece and Italy – ensuring the children are protected wherever possible. We also work in countries like Germany, to ensure that these children understand their rights and have access to care and support.
