Gas Boilers
Sale of gas boilers in March 2015 fell by 2.6% in comparison with March 2014.
Year to date sales are 8.1% lower than at this time last year. The slower start to the year is largely attributable
to the high volume of sales through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme in early 2014.
Sales on a moving annual basis are 5.6% lower than last year.

Hot Water Storage Cylinders
Hot water storage cylinder sales in March 2015 were 4.91% higher than sales in March 2014. A decrease in
the sales of cylinders for renewable systems was offset by 6.8% growth in the market for conventional
cylinders.
Year-to-date cylinder sales are 1.9% ahead of their 2014 mark.
Sales on a moving annual basis are 0.9% lower than in the previous year.

Sales for the year-to-date are 45% lower than at this point last year.

Quarter 4’s figures bring the cumulative total of installed smart meters to 764,806. Of these, 452,860 are
electrical smart meters and 311,946 are gas meters.

2. Macroeconomic Statistics
Housing
Seasonally adjusted housing starts in England were estimated at 29,800 for Quarter 4 2014 – a
decrease of 8.7% over Quarter 4 2013.
Seasonally adjusted completions for Q4 2014 were 30,760 - an increase of 7.9% over 28,510 in Q4
2013.
In March 2015, the price of the average UK house reached £189,454.
Price growth on an annual basis was 5.1%.
Annual house price growth slowed further in March, marking the seventh consecutive month in
which the rate of growth has softened.
There were a total of 100,790 residential property transactions in March 2015.
This was a decline of 2.5% in comparison with March 2014.
Gross mortgage lending reached £16.5 billion in March 2015 – rising from £15.4 billion in March 2014.
Gross mortgage lending for the year to date reached £45 billion. This is 3% lower than at this time in 2014.
The UK construction purchasing managers’ index* (PMI) fell to 57.8 in March, down from 60.1 in
February and 62.5 in March 2014.
*A PMI value of more than 50 represents expansion of the sector, anything below 50 signifies a contraction.

Consumer Sector
UK consumer confidence rose to 4 in March, increasing from 1 in February and -5 in March 2014.
Retail sales value grew in March by 0.7% annually (5% excluding fuel), although sales on a monthly
basis are 0.4% lower than February.
New car registrations continued to see annual growth in March 2015.
Monthly sales were 492,774 in March 2015, the best month since twice-yearly number plate
changes were introduced.
Inflation on an annual basis - as measured by the Consumer Price Index – fell to -0.1% in March.
Annual inflation – as measured by the Retail Price Index – remained positive at 0.9%.

Macroeconomic Indicators
Gross Domestic Product grew by 3% on an annual basis. Meanwhile, GDP per capita continued to
show strong growth, with annual growth of 2.3%.
Unemployment fell to 5.6% in January 2015, a significant fall from 6.9% in January 2014.
The rate of economic inactivity remained at 22.1% in March.
UK national debt rose by 5.9% in the past 12 months, reaching £1.484 trillion by the end of March.
Net public debt as a percentage of GDP rose by 1.3 percentage points in the last 12 months,
reaching 80.4%.

Manufacturing Sector
“Factory gate inflation” as measured by PPI Output fell to -1.65% in the year to March.
Annual input price inflation deepened to -13%, although month-on-month inflation was positive.
Eurozone manufacturing expanded more quickly in March than previous months. The weakening
Euro led to improved export order inflows.
Eurozone PMI of 52.2 was significantly higher than the 51 seen in February.
UK PMI rose to 54.4 in March, reaching an eight-month high.

Non-Domestic RHI Applications
The Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a Government environmental programme that
provides financial incentives to increase the uptake of renewable heat for non-domestic purposes.
March 2015 saw a surge in the number of applications to join the Non-Domestic RHI scheme. 1,353
applications were made in March, compared with 122 in February.
The increase is largely attributable to the tariff reduction that came into effect on 1st April 2015.
As of 31st March 2015, a total of 13,023 applications had been made to join the scheme.

Domestic RHI Applications
The Domestic RHI is a Government environmental programme that promotes the use of renewable heat for
domestic purposes.
Aggregate monthly Domestic RHI applications continued to grow in March. 8,539 applications (for
both new and legacy installations) were made in March, compared with 3,286 in February.
In total, 36,707 applications have been made under the domestic RHI scheme.

Compared with February, March saw a 6% rise in the number of boilers installed through Green
Deal Finance.
The number of boilers installed through the ECO* scheme fell by 0.3%.

increased reporting and verification time.

The cumulative number of Green Deal Assessments reached 529,354 in March 2015.
The 27,450 GD Assessments in March 2015 was a 2.8% decrease in comparison with February.
Up to the end of March 2015, there were 12,076 GD plans in the system, an increase of 18% over
February.
Of these plans, 25% are in their first stage (“New Plans” – quote accepted), 19% are in the second
stage (“Pending Plans” – Plan signed) and the remaining 56% are in the final stage (“Live Plans” –
all measures installed).

Feed-in Tariff Installations
The number of Feed-in Tariff commissioned installations reached 680,000 in March 2015.
There were a total of 16,089 new installations in March, the vast majority (99.6%) of these were
solar PV installations.
Of the cumulative installed capacity, 84% is accounted for by PV installations and 11% by wind.

Regional House Prices
House price growth in London and surrounding areas continued to outpace growth in other areas of
the country.
London saw annual house price growth of 13%, while prices in the Outer Metropolitan and Outer
South-East areas grew by 12% and 8% respectively.
House prices in Wales fell in comparison with Q1 2014, while price growth in Yorkshire and
Scotland fell to 1%.

Regional Housing Starts and Completions
In Q4 2014, the number of quarterly housing starts grew annually in 18 of the 39 regions listed.
Coventry and Warwickshire (66%) and Northamptonshire (60%) displayed the highest growth since
Q4 2013.
In the 19 regions where the number of starts fell, the effect was most pronounced in Cornwall and
the Isles of Scilly, where the number of starts was 49% lower than in the same quarter last year.
The number of quarterly housing completions grew annually in 27 of the 39 regions listed.
Growth was strongest in Leicestershire (71%) and Berkshire (60%).
In the 11 regions where the number of completions fell, the decrease was most significant in the
Humber (-30%).
