DESIGN OVERVIEW

Williamstown Botanic Gardens is oneof the oldest Botanic Gardens inVictoria. With a sweeping, arabesque path system designed byEdward Latrobe Bateman, magnificent tree canopy, richshrubberies and a strong Edwardiancharacter, the gardens are anoutstanding example of one ofVictoria's many 19th centuryBotanic Gardens.

The Master Plan aims to enhance theGardens' qualities by continuing thereunification of the site, enrichingthe aesthetic of the Gardens, providing a basis for the scientificmanagement of plant collections andproviding the facilities and servicesexpected of a modern BotanicGarden.

The northern half of the BotanicGardens is visually pleasing, with agood structural framework ofarabesque paths, open lawns, mature trees and botanically diversegarden beds. Therefore thechanges proposed by the MasterPlan to these Northern Gardens areminimal – and are aimed at enhancingthe already strong character byimproved planting detail andpresentation to the surroundingstreets. This includes rationalising ofthe parking, adding new gardenbeds, and providing decorativeentrances.

The southern portion of the site, known as the Pinetum, has a strongvisual character and it is byenhancing this space and continuingthe work of visually reunifying thePinetum and the Northern Gardensthat the Master Plan makes its mostsubstantial recommendations.

Pinetum works include removing thefence that divides the site, therefore strengthening the strongaxial design, and introducing aground plane of decorative planting. This planting will not interfere withthe current spatial character of thePinetum but will simply reinforce theconnection between the two spaces.

In recent years the public’sexpectations of Botanic Gardens haschanged, and to stay relevantBotanic Gardens are expected to bemore than just collections of plantsand places to walk and picnic.Visitor services such as educationalfacilities, information desks andgood access to public toilets arealso expected, and help build thereputation and popularity of aGarden. In order to provide theseresources, it is recommended thatthe former Williamstown City CouncilParks Depot be returned to theGardens, and redeveloped into agardens management, education andvisitor centre.

The Williamstown Botanic Gardens isin a strong position, where due tothe success of previous workpreviously the Gardens can nowembark on the next stage of theirdevelopment - building what isalready a valuable resource into oneof Victoria's premier BotanicGardens.
