ESCAPE

My room’s a wreck. A 32-ton shark fishingvessel built in Tasmania in 1966 that wentdown off Kangaroo Island on January 14,1973. Hit by a huge wave, the Amber Star’splanking sprang loose and she sank, onemile south of Cape Bouguer.

Actually, I’m comfortably ensconced inmy suite, named Amber Star, at SouthernOcean Lodge, a luxury resort cum sanctu-ary nestled, almost floating, along the cliffs,above the pounding surf of Hanson Bay onKangaroo Island’s southwest coast, offSouth Australia.

The lodge adjoins Cape Bouguer, nearwhere the Amber Star met her waterydemise. So as I look out to a panorama ofocean and rocks and sand, a coastal palettewith its own eco-chic style, I’m readingabout the shark-catching vessel’s untimelyend in Gifford Chapman’s Kangaroo IslandShipwrecks. It’s an engrossing account ofships and cutters wrecked around the4400sq km island – Australia’s third-largest – 112km southwest of Adelaide.There’s a hardback copy in every room,each bearing the name of a shipwreck.

And there have been a few. For whileKangaroo Island is today popular withvisitors who are drawn to it as a sanctuaryfor wildlife, for its natural, rugged beautyand production of artisan food and wine,history records that it has been a destruc-

tive magnet to many ships, big and small,with many lives lost.

Sealers and whalers plied the coastlinehere and, unrecorded, many disappearedwithout trace. It is known that more than80 ships have been wrecked off KangarooIsland since the turn of the 19th centurywhen Matthew Flinders was the firstrecorded European to the island, aboardthe HMS Investigator.

And yes, there were so many kangaroosobserved by Flinders while surveying theisland’s breadth and length that henaturally named it so.

And the ’roo population on the islandremains strong today, with the chocolatebrown sooty subspecies of western greys tobe observed at close range browsing andgrazing at dusk – while we humans enjoy acanape and a glass of wine, organised bySouthern Ocean Lodge.

One-third of the island is national parkand there are 12 discrete conservationparks, including one where you can walkunder trees whose branches carry sleepybut healthy koalas.

Goannas and echidnas inhabit theisland and there are more than 250 speciesof birds – including sea eagles, osprey andwedge-tailed eagles – and more than 50plant species not found anywhere else onEarth.

In June, southern right and humpbackwhales begin to arrive for their annual visitto the protected waters around the island,heading back south to the Antarctic in

October. Through spring, hundreds ofthousands of migratory birds move past thesouth coast of the island and are bestobserved from around its three lighthouses– Cape Willoughby (built in 1852), Cape DuCouedic (1906) and Cape Borda (1858).

Not far from Cape Borda, within Flin-ders Chase National Park, is anotherdistinct landmark, Remarkable Rocks – theindeed remarkable shape of the graniteboulders the result of 500 million years ofrain, wind and pounding waves.

Penneshaw is where you will comeacross hundreds of penguins, called blue,little blue and fairy, returning home to theirburrows as night falls after a hard day’sfishing.

Kangaroo Island is also the world’s onlysanctuary for the last genetically purepopulation of Italy’s Ligurian bees, withhoney produced on the island since theirintroduction in the late 1800s.

The island also harbours theendangered Australian sea lion at Seal Bay,and Australian fur seals at Admirals Arch(another impressive natural landmark).

During breeding it’s likely you willwitness their fierce territorial battles – fromthe safety of boardwalks.

But most of the time they gather on thebeach or along the rocks, enjoying thewarm sun, resting after fishing for days onend – as once in the water their lumberingbodies become agile swimmers.

Seal Bay is a national park sanctuaryand is the only place in the world whereyou can walk through the heart of a sealion colony with experienced guides, alonga platform and onto the beach.

It’s mesmerising to view these marinemammals up close, the brown-haired bullsweighing up to 350kg, the ash-grey femalesweighing less than one-third that weight.Hunted to near extinction during the 19thcentury, today there are about 1000 sealions at Seal Bay.

I was lucky to observe an attempt tomate play out on the beach, as three bullsfought over one female. The scars from oldwounds on many of the bulls hint at thefierce territorial nature of the mating ritual.

After all, females come into season for awindow of only one day within 10 days ofgiving birth to a pup, and the pregnancygestation lasts a laborious 17.6 months.

New pups, which are born from Mayonwards each year, are microchipped tomonitor long-term population changes.

Large, sweeping windowwalls capture the expansive views and a100m long wall of Kangaroo Island lime-stone is a striking sculptural element thatweaves from the grand rusted steel doors atthe entrance to the Great Room loungewith open bar, nestled above the restaurantand walk-in cellar.

Lining the expanse of windows in theGreat Room are the wonderful GhostChairs, tempting to occupy with a glass ofSouth Australian red and a good book ormagazine.

Early this year the lodge was rankedfourth in the world in US magazine Trav-el+Leisure’s 2016 World’s Best Awards.

In 2009 it was described as Australia’sfirst “super lodge” by UK magazine Tatler,which anointed it as its “hotel of the year”.

The formula – blending contemporaryluxury and nature – seems to be working.The lodge’s 21 suites each enjoy breath-taking panoramic views and the fuss-freeall-inclusive rates, and first-class diningand service, make for one of those ultimateisland experiences. Chef Alastair Waddell

I’m not sure if it was the lavender andeucalyptus aromas in the room, but I foundmyself drifting off, thinking about cosyingup with a book and a Kis Wild Gin back atmy Amber Star, still comfortably afloat.

After touring the island, taking inrugged vistas from the cliffside walk andenjoying good wine and food, the next stepis to chill under therapeutic hands atSouthern Spa, a short stroll along theboardwalk from the lodge.
