Environmental Issues
Environmental issue
- the negative impact of human activity on the earth and environment
There are many types!
1. Energy - overuse of fossil fuels, nuclear energy, solar power, and wind farms 2. Pollution - oil spills, ocean dead zones, urban run-off, land fills, smog 3. Habitat destruction - land use, urban sprawl, invasive species4. Resource depletion - salmon overfishing, logging vs spotted owl, poaching - animal endangerment & extinction
Solutions All solutions have both positive and negative impacts
Alternative energies
1. Solar
Example: Windows on the south side of the houseB) Active - using mechanical devices to move heat collected from the sun through heating systems
Examples: solar panels, flashing lights around stop signs, calculators
2. Wind - (kinetic energy) - turbines used to generate electricity - wind mill farms
A) Passive - heat energy produced by absorption of direct sunlight
3. Hydroelectric - converting the kinetic energy of falling water into electricity Example: Bonneville Dam4. Biofuel - fuel made from plants (biomass)
Example: Corn
