Barefoot solar engineers (BSEs)
Barefoot solar engineering is an employment opportunity
for the poorest of poor members in a rural community. It
generates an additional source of income for those who do
not ‘qualify’ even for the lowest government job. The
College motivates the communities to give this opportunity
especially to middle-aged women, such as those who are
widows and single mothers with families. It persuades them
to choose people who have their roots in the village and will
stay and work there for its development rather than migrate
to the city soon after training. By being solar engineers they
receive an additional source of income as well as continue
to be involved with their family and craft, agriculture, animal
husbandry and other income generating activities.
Role of a Rural Electronic Workshop (REW)
A Rural Electronic Workshop comprises of 4 SPV modules
(12V, 80W each) with a stand, 1 Charge controller (12V,
40Amp), 1 Inverter (12V, 800VA) and 4 tubular batteries
(12V, 75AH each) along with 4mm positive and negative
wires and 16mm connectors. Among equipment, 1 digital
dual power supply (0 to 30V DC 2Amp), 1 assembly jig, 2
soldering irons with stand, solder wire and spare bits, 1
extension board, 1 personal tool kit for each BSE and spare
printed circuit boards and components for repair and
production.
Any Other Information: The Barefoot College
believes that practical
skills as much as paper
qualifications are crucial in
supporting and developing
the poorest and least
literate communities. The
32
training of villagers to install solar lighting systems in the
Himalayas captures perfectly that philosophy.
Burdened by temperatures of -40 degrees centigrade in
winter and with only six hours of daylight, local communities
in the Himalayas often lack the funds needed to buy
kerosene for lighting and heating. The Barefoot College’s
answer is not short-term subsidy, but practical solutions
and training. Barefoot engineers from the poorest
communities are trained over a period of three to six
months in the installation and maintenance of solar lighting
systems developed by the college. By 2009, 472 had
qualified.
The College encourages the communities to take
responsibility for their energy needs. Each community must
form an Energy Committee and chose its own candidates
for training. At least 30% of the committee members must
be women. The Committee is responsible for deciding how
much each family must pay for the system and for
administering the system once it is up and running. Like the
system itself, responsibility is a long-term investment.
Success can be measured by numbers. 20,000 solar
lighting systems and 65 heating systems in 753 villages by
2009, not only in India but in other parts of Asia and Africa.
However, in a less-polluted environment offering greater
job opportunities, success can be measured as much by
improved lives.

The core of SELCO and its Innovation Department is to
provide customized solutions based on end user needs. By
establishing partnerships and innovating we recognize the
need to inter-connect products and services and of adding
value through a network to subscribe to a customized end
user needs based model.
AFFORDABLE SOLAR POWER
SELCO believes that clean
energy can work for
everyone, rich and poor. But
it also appreciates that,
without credit, clean energy
can remain the preserve of
the few. By working with
local banks and microfinance organisations, SELCO has
given nearly 112,000 homes
across Southern India access to
more reliable and more cost-
effective sources of power.
The technology is solar, tailored
photovoltaic systems installed in
homes and also for market-stall holders and other small
businesses. In a country where electricity supply is unreliable
for many and non-existent for 44% of the population, this is
life-changing. Children can read, women can devote more
time to income-generating activities and all can breathe more
easily as kerosene–burning lamps are discarded.
The credit comes in the form of loans from the finance
institutions which are also tailored to individual circumstance
and which are typically repaid over five years with savings
from lower fuel costs. SELCO doesn’t make loans itself, but
provides the credibility and customer knowledge which the
lender requires.
34
All of which saves an estimated 35,000 tonnes/year CO2. As
significantly, SELCO has also attracted major investment
from finance institutions that recognise that technology and
sustainability can be both life-enhancing and profitable.
Any other information: SELCO currently employs about 140 employees in Karnataka
and Gujarat spread across 21 energy service centers. Since
1995, we have sold, serviced and financed over 100,000
solar systems to our customers.

Solar lamps
This project is working in the
shifting street markets of
Bhopal, in northern India. The
project, run by MPGVM
(Madhya Pradesh Gramin Vikas
Mandal), is hiring solar lanterns
to market vendors and street
hawkers who work at night. The idea is to provide them with a
cleaner, cheaper, and safer form of lighting for their stalls. The
vendors have traditionally hired kerosene lamps or electrical
lamps, powered by diesel generator sets, to light their wares.
These are expensive, and, in the case of the kerosene lamps,
polluting. This project is giving the vendors the option of hiring
solar lanterns at a cheaper rate. It delivers the lanterns to the
vendors each evening, and collects them again at around
11.00pm for recharging. The idea has been widely welcomed.
36
With their wares being better lit, the vendors are selling more
products and they don't have to spend so much money on
hiring lights or buying kerosene

The Ranthambhore National Park in Rajasthan, India, is the
home of the endangered Indian tiger, and demand for
fuelwood for cooking in surrounding villages puts great
pressure on the park's trees. The Prakratik Society has
installed 250 biogas digesters in villages on the park's fringes.
The digesters use cattle manure to produce biogas for
cooking, and thus save fuelwood. Other important benefits are
a cleaner and safer fuel for cooking, and a valuable fertiliser
from the digester output.
37
The Ashden judges found
many exemplary features in
this project. It provides both a
sustainable cooking fuel and
protects the local
environment. Users are
actively involved in the
construction and upkeep of the digesters.
Unsustainable use of fuelwood adds carbon dioxide to the
atmosphere, thus this biogas project also contributes to the
reduction of climate change. The Ashden Award to the
Prakratik Society has been generously funded by Climate
Care, an organisation which helps companies and individuals
to counter their impact on climate change by funding new
projects to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

IT Power India (ITPI) has
worked with the Watermillers
Association of Chamoli (WMA-C) in the Himalayan state of
Uttaranchal, northern India, to upgrade over 70 traditional
38
watermills which are used to produce flour. The upgrading
has greatly increased the output capacity of each mill, and
thus the income of watermilling families.
This project demonstrates the continuing viability of
traditional water mills which, used appropriately, can mill
flour more cheaply than the diesel mills which are
threatening to replace them. The increase in income from
an upgraded mill is such that the investment can be paid

Aurore is a hub of expertise. Not just technical expertise, but
also critical financial and management expertise. By
providing such a suite of skills, Aurore enables partner
organisations across India to install and operate PV water
pumps, solar home systems and solar lanterns providing
cheaper, more sustainable energy
than diesel-based alternatives.
By 2009 lighting systems had
been set up in 17,000 homes.
Even more significantly, over
7,000 PV pumps have been installed bringing huge benefits
to local communities. In Gujarat alone over 3000 villages are
39
using PV pumps to provide
drinking water or wider irrigation.
Some installations are
government-subsidised. However,
as Aurore has long-recognised,
and as their current support for ‘solar entrepreneurs’ who rent
out lamps to street hawkers demonstrates, the long-term
success of PV systems ultimately depends on their
commercial viability.

Solar lanterns
Poor quality and irregular
lighting blights lives. When that
light comes from kerosene wick
lamps, it not only strains eyes,
but produces dangerous fumes
and the risk of fire. Yet in India
100 million homes use just this form of lighting.
Solar lighting is an obvious solution. However, NEST’s
achievement is to develop a
solar lantern which is small and
practical and yet which is also
cost-effective for its users.
Costing about US$35 each, the
lanterns are self-funding in one
to two years depending on the kerosene saved.
There is no subsidy involved. Indeed NEST is a private
company using a network of independent dealers who
maintain the lamps and organise the financing. This is a
model of commercial enterprise delivering sustainable,
40
environmental benefits.
By 2009 lanterns were in use in 100,000 homes in the
states of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, benefitting over
400,000 people. Over 20,000 tonnes/year CO2 is being
saved by the reduction in the use of kerosene. The benefits
are legion. As one user says, they can now use the solar
lanterns to deter the pigs that used to eat their crops. It
seems, pigs apart, everyone is happy.

Efficient school cookstoves
Loading a school Nishant stove with briquettes.
For the many schools that provide meals for pupils across
India the cost of LPG for cooking is a problem. For the
country’s many farmers crop waste is just that, a waste
41
product that often has to be burned to make way for new
planting. For Nishant Bioenergy these are two issues that
can be dealt with in tandem.
Their solution is the Sanjha Chulha (combined stove). Made
of brick, it is designed specifically for institutional scale
cooking. It is clean and efficient, but best of all it is fuelled
by the crop waste produced by local farmers. This waste is
sold by the farmers to local
plants that compress it in
to briquettes for fuel use.
Estimates suggest that
farmers’ annual income is
10% higher as a result of
selling on the waste.
The benefits to the schools are as impressive. The stoves
cost US$3000 each, but the saving on fuel (LPG) is US$350
a month. Nishant also
arranges credit to enable
the schools to invest in the
plant and provides training
and maintenance. By 2009
Nishant had sold 24 stoves
serving thousands of pupils.
Nor are they resting on their laurels. The development of a
smaller Earth Stove for roadside food stalls has been a
major success with nearly 200 sold. With each stove saving
10 tonnes/year CO2 economic and environmental benefits
go together. As Nishant always intended.

Low-cost treadle pumps for irrigation
Bhikram Singh, 79 next birthday, operates a treadle pump
in Uttar Pradesh.
International Development Enterprises, India (IDEI) has
commercialised low-cost
treadle pumps for irrigation.
Over 510,000 pumps have
been sold in the rural areas of
the Eastern part of India,
bringing substantial benefits to
farming families.
Many farmers in the plains of the North and East of India
rely on a single annual crop
such as wheat or maize,
watered by the monsoon. The
income which they derive is
small, and this forces many to
seek casual work in cities
such as Lucknow for part of
the year, often disrupting children's education since the
whole family moves to the city. The water table in the
region is consistently high, so out-of-season crops can be
grown under irrigation if a pump is available. Affluent
farmers can afford to buy and operate diesel pumps.
Poorer farmers may also hire diesel pumps, but often at
very high cost.
IDEI commercialised low-cost treadle pumps for irrigation.
The pumps are designed to be simple for people of all ages
43
to operate, and most members of a household, including
children, can take part. Typically, the household will pump
for two to eight hours a day. Poor farmers can now cultivate
and sell a variety of crops outside the normal growing
season and bring additional land under cultivation because
it can be irrigated. The increase in family income means
that the cost of the pump can be paid back from the profits
of one extra harvest. All components of the pumps are
manufactured locally, and IDEI has successfully developed
a supply chain of manufacturers, distributors, retailers and
installers.

Pune State in Southern India may be relatively prosperous,
but on its roadsides you will often find waste food, discarded
and left to rot, and creating a potentially serious health
hazard. However, for ARTI this problem is also an
opportunity.
Founded by scientists and
social workers, ARTI looks
to technology for solutions
to rural issues. In the case
of the waste in Pune, their
solution is a domestic
biogas plant. The plant
breaks down the kitchen waste. The broken-down waste in
turn produces biogas that canreplace more polluting and
expensive fuels. The whole process is neat and efficient.
And it is cost-effective. At only US$200 per plant, it pays its
way in less than two years and detailed studies have
pointed to a saving of 0.3 tonnes/year CO2 per plant. In total
ARTI has installed 1000 plants with many more potential
users in the pipeline.
Moreover, as a charity ARTI is committed to passing on
skills. Design manuals and engineers encourage others to
design and adapt their own plants, while ARTI itself is
constantly expanding and refining its models. A compelling
example of technology working best when coupled with a
longer-term vision.

Biogas plants and improved fertiliser
Cultivating azolla, VK-NARDEP, southern India.
Customer satisfaction even
extends to manure in Tamil
Nadu in India. “I have fertiliser
for my farm, I have gas for my
kitchen, what more do I
need?” says one user of VK-
NARDEP’s biogas plants.
The plants are tackling the ongoing problem of burning wood and
kerosene in domestic stoves. Polluting to the immediate and
wider environment, these stoves also do little for the working lives
of users, many of whom are farmers for whom better crop yields
are of prime importance. This need to provide a robust economic
incentive for adoption led VK-NARDEP to develop a plant that not
produces valuable biogas for cooking but also processes the left-
over slurry to make a high quality fertiliser as its by-product.
Evidence suggests they are
succeeding with crop yields
improving by 20-30% since
adoption and evidence that
the farmers can recoup their
initial investment of between
US$210 and US$750 within two years. The environmental
benefits are as impressive. Each biogas plant saves about 2.5
tonnes/year of fuelwood, equivalent to about four tonnes/year of
CO2. And incidence of respiratory diseases has reduced among
users.
VK-NARDEP is part of a spiritual centre and research institute.
After all, as another satisfied customer said of the plants. “All you
need is spirituality and slurry.”

Turning food waste into gas
Mrs Gayashree with her
BIOTECH biogas plant and

Getting rid of waste, both food and
human, is essential to hygiene.
But waste is also a cost-effective and sustainable source of fuel.
The evidence? Well, since 2004 BIOTECH has improved the
lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Kerala, Southern
India and saved several thousand tonnes per year of CO2
simply by getting rid of waste.
Their success is all down to
their biogas digester. Designed
to be easily installed, it comes
in different sizes to process not
only home waste but also
market and municipal waste.
Digestion produces biogas which in turn reduces reliance on
more expensive and harder to access LPG.
BIOTECH has calculated that the average family can pay back
47
the cost of the digester in three years. They also facilitate the
government subsidies which may cover part of the installation
costs. By 2009 they had installed 16,000 plants in total.
BIOTECH is a burgeoning organisation. It has tripled in size
since 2006 and now employs over 140 people with a wider
network of installers. It continues to refine and expand the
digester model and to spread the word across the country.
Unsurprisingly demand is growing. After all, here is a product
that works.

Biogas for cooking plus fertiliser from slurry
SKG Sangha uses local masons to build a biogas plant in

Replacing firewood with more
sustainable and less-polluting
48
sources of fuel is one of the major challenges across rural
India. The wood is taken from increasingly depleted sources
and burnt on fires or in open, smoky stoves. In parallel animal
dung and household waste is often not disposed of quickly or
efficiently. Put the two together and you have a serious
environmental and health issue.
By developing small biogas
plants for domestic use in the
state of Karantaka, SKG
Sangha has tackled both
problems. The plants use dung
and household waste to
produce biogas and a compost
by-product which users, usually women, can sell. The plants
are cleaner, cheaper and support the immediate and wider
environment by disposing of waste quicker and contributing
less to air pollution.
Demand is huge. Over 80,000 plants had been installed by
2009 benefitting an impressive half a million people. Each
plant is estimated to save four tonnes/year CO2. And the
ripple effect on the local economy is particularly striking with
over 2000 people employed to build, sell and maintain the
plants.

Pedalling farmers out of poverty
Amitabha Sadangi, the inspiration
behind IDEI
IDEI’s promotion of treadle
pumps for irrigation is an
impressive example of the
numbers of people that can
benefit from technology and good
business sense. But maybe as
impressive is the evidence that in
addition to the staple maize diet,
farmers’ families using the pumps now grow and eat papaya,
onions, coriander, garlic, cauliflower and sweet potatoes.
Very human evidence of the
impact of technology and
business-sense on our quality of
life.
The demand for better irrigation
in India is huge. 98 million
farmers are smallholders and most only grow one crop a
year, watered by the monsoon. In response IDEI has set up
a distribution system for their low-cost (US$30-US$42)
treadle pump which has revolutionised capacity. Farmers
can now grow two or even three crops a year. Incomes in
some areas have doubled. In total by 2009 over 750,000
treadle pumps had been installed bringing benefits to nearly
four million people. This is change on a huge, yet affordable
scale.
Yet IDEI believes that there is much further to go. Ambitious
Bollywood-style marketing aims to help them provide another
four million systems in ten years. And a spin-off company is
spearheading an international push. Through IDEI, a locally
developed solution is capable of tackling a serious global
problem.

Business finds green solution
to black-outs
Dhaincha is the main fuel for
SRE’s gasifier plant, Bihar, India
A reliable power supply is critical
for any business anywhere in the
world. But in the Indian state of
Bihar power is not reliable. Blackouts are frequent and debilitating
for local businesses and farmers, often lasting for days at a time.
Expensive and polluting diesel generators are often the only
answer.
Local energy company Saran Renewable Energy’s response has
been to build a generating plant run on gasified biomass. The
biomass comes from
‘dhaincha’, a local woody plant
which can be easily and
profitably grown by local
farmers. The generator
connects to transmission lines
to supply small businesses
with electricity for a
guaranteed 11 hours a day.
52
And that reliability is key. Users pay a little more for their
electricity than they do from the mains supply (though much less
than they would for diesel). However, the loss of income from no
power would be much higher. And a reliable power supply means
no need to use polluting generators. 206 tonnes/year CO2 are
saved by the plant with diesel use almost totally eliminated.
The potential for replication is huge. Bihar and other states cannot
attract investment without a reliable source of power. Saran’s
scheme has huge potential and has attracted a lot of interest. It
certainly requires capital expenditure which takes several years to
recoup. But the longer-term benefits are there for all to see.

the Organization:
The main focus of WII in renewable energy has been in the areas
of commercialization, enterprise development, financing,
institutional linkages and capacity building. WII, therefore, has
been working closely with institutions and organizations including
NGOs, utilities, self-help groups, bankers and micro-credit
organizations in building their capacities to take sound decisions
on renewable energy. Owing to access to the markets that
these organizations have and their presence at the grassroots,
these capacity building measures ultimately benefit the common
man and the rural people.
During the last two decades, WII's renewable energy programs
have grown in volume and reach. The emphasis is currently on
62
commercialization - with participation from various stakeholders
in power generation from solar, and biomass combustion /
gasification, rural electrification through the bio-diesel route as
well as setting up ethanol production facilities.
At another level, WII works closely with multilateral banks and
policymakers to set in place institutions, institutional
mechanisms, policies and funds that promote renewable energy.
One of the main areas of strength of WII has been renewable
energy enterprise development by addressing barriers
confronting renewable energy use. A step in this direction has
been to develop a market for solar photovoltaic systems by
improving entrepreneurs’ access to finance and credit services.
WII collaborates with business enterprises, identifies business
opportunities for them, offers management and technical support,
addresses enterprise financing issues and sets them on path to
sustainable renewable energy business
Indicative list of the projects in the area of renewable energy are
as below:
• Enhancing Livelihoods through Provision of Irrigation
Facilities in a Remote Village in Chhattisgarh
• ProBIOS: Promotion of Biofuels for Sustainable
Development in South and South-east Asia
• Promotion of Bio-fuels for energizing remote villages in India
• Economic, Social and Environmental benefits through the
use of Fuel efficient stoves in hotels / dhabas / street side
eateries in Mahbubnagar district, Andhra Pradesh
• Increased Use of Renewable Energy Program, Impact
Assessment of the India Renewable Resources
Development Project (RRDP)
• Renewable Energy Commercialization (RECOMM),
Alternative Transport Fuels: Biomass-to-Ethanol Initiative for
India
• Accelerating Renewable Energy Commercialization in India
(ARECOMM)
• Scoping Study on Access to Energy
• Monitoring and Evaluation of Carbon Neutral Biodiesel
Fueled Energy System etc.
