CALF VACCINATION PROGRAM At birth the calves receive a 7-way shot and an oral dose of TMR 125E paste (vitamins, minerals, and probiotics). Before going to grass in May they receive Vision 7, Bovishield Gold 5, and One Shot Pasteurella. These shots are repeated at weaning with Somnus added to the 7-way. The calves are back poured with Promectin B at weaning. The bull calves are back poured again in January.

ELMWOOD LIMOUSIN/SCHUPPE FARMS
LIMOUSIN and LIM-FLEX CATTLE Dear Cattlemen and Friends: Welcome to our 20th Annual Sale. It doesn’t seem possible that it has been 20 years already. We have certainly met some real fine people and made many friends over the years. We would like to thank our valued customers for allowing us to pursue our passion of supply-ing bulls to the commercial cattleman. The set of bulls we are selling this year is our most uniform group to date. Every bull is black and polled. Crossbreeding is making a comeback in the cattle industry and these bulls will certainly compliment every crossbreeding program. We feel every good bull must be out of a real good cow. We are providing MPPA information on all cows with their weaning and yearling weight ratios. Come early and enjoy some of Mom’s homemade grebel. Then, join us for lunch at 11:00 p.m. The sale will begin at 12:30 p.m. We hope you have a very enjoyable day. God Bless, THE SCHUPPE FAMILY
Gordon, Earline, Kassi Mike & Kammy

BENEFIT OF HYBRID VIGOR IN A CROSSBRED ANIMAL TRAIT ADVANTAGE CROSSBRED COW (CROSSBRED vs PUREBRED) ON COW PRODUCTIVITY Cow Efficiency (calf weaning weight/cow weight) 8% Cow Longevity 38% Cow Lifetime Productivity 25%
Total Dollar Impact (annually) $116.88
CROSSBRED CALF ON CALF PERFORMANCE Calf Weaning Weight 5% Calf Yearling Weight 4%
Total Dollar Impact (annually) $23.27
This table shows that the greatest impact of crossbreeding is with the crossbred cow.
LIMS is the North American Limousin Foundation inventory management program. We are enrolled in this program which requires that every calf born must be recorded and have performance information reported. LIMS provides members and NALF a number of benefits— the incentive to capture unbiased, complete performance and reproductive information for more reliable genetic predictions (EPDs), assist in culling and selection, identify genetic and manage-ment areas that need improvement, and monitor overall reproductive performance. Gathering complete herd information will help position the Limousin breed for future improvements. LIMS adheres to Beef Improvement Federation guidelines for inventory based recording.
The Key to Maximum Cow Profitability The production and economical advantages of commercial crossbred cows adapted to their environment as compared to straightbreds are undeniable. 20 percent more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed be-cause of hybrid vigor for age at puberty, conception rate, survival to weaning, milk production and weaning weight; 1.3 years additional cow longevity; And therefore, up to 30 percent greater lifetime cow productivity. How much crossbred advantage can you afford to give up? If you start with F1 Angus-cross females and use Angus bulls for three generations, the resulting calves are 15/16 Angus. That sacrifices 87% of hybrid vigor. Research and practical experience clearly have demonstrated that commercial F1 crossbred cows return $70 to $100 more per year than straightbred cows. If the chosen crossbreeding system yields between 50 and 67 percent of maximum maternal heterosis, even $50 per year in crossbreeding advantage adds up to $400 or so greater lifetime earnings per hybrid cow as
MPPA—Most probable Producing Ability is an indication of the within herd rank for the cow based on the average weaning weight ratio of her progeny. MPPAs above 100 indicate the progeny of the dam have had above average ratio in the contemporary groups. Because MPPAs do not take into account the growth influence of the sire, differences may exist between two similar cows that are mated to different sires.

Why Lim-Flex? HYBRID VIGOR!
World’s largest cattle feeder gives insight on cattle industry: Tom Brink of
Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding challenges producers to crossbreed. Brink
states that one trend that will bring more value to beef is the expanding
popularity of Angus hybrids. Specifically, hybrid bulls on Angus based cows.
From a feedlot perspective, Brink believes the hybrid Angus trend will be
beneficial to the industry particularly on yield grades. “There have been
cutability issues and overly fat cattle that the higher percentage Angus cattle
bring to the industry. Our buyers say the ideal Angus percentage is 50 to 75%.”
Part of the reason straight Angus is not a total solution, is hybrid vigor.
“Hybrid vigor is still very important at the cow/calf level and you can’t get
that by crossing Angus on Angus for multiple generations. But structured
crossbreeding has been too hard to implement, especially for small producers.
So the hybrid bull is convenient and brings the muscle that continental breeds
offer to the table.”

HOW WE HANDLE OUR BULLS
Our cows graze on both dry land and irrigated grass during the summer
months and cornstalks in the winter with mineral tubs available all the time.
Our calves are grown on mother’s milk and grass until weaning. NO CREEP
FEED. We find creep feeding gives a false reading as to what a cow can
actually produce. After weaning, the bulls are put on a high roughage ration
consisting of ground alfalfa, ground oat hay, corn silage, high moisture corn,
a liquid protein supplement, and free choice prairie hay.
Our bull calves run in a long pen, 1/4 mile in length. They make
several trips a day from one end of the pen to the other, ensuring they get
plenty of exercise. Our bulls are not overly fat. Several of our customers
have commented that our bulls are in good condition after the first breeding
season. We take weights several times from weaning to sale date. The bulls
have been tested negative for BVD. DNA testing has been done for homozy-
gous black and homozygous polled traits and the positive results appear with
each lot. We will have scrotal measurements, hip height, rib eye, and marbling
scores available on sale day. We hope this added information will help make
your bull selection easier.

REFERENCE SIRES
KAJO RESPONDER 120R RESPONDER is a double homozygous, performance oriented sire out of one of best cows on the farm. He is sound, bold-sprung and practical in his look. His progeny are deep, high growth cattle that are moderate in their kind with lots of rib shape. The bulls have an abundance of testicular development and the females have excellent udders. The first daughters calved in 2009 and have proven to be good producers. Out of an outstanding HC Polled I dam from our daughter Kassi’s herd. 17 sons are offered in the sale. The results we continue to see out of Responder are what we had hoped for and more. Hager Cattle Co. of Karlsruhe, ND exhibited the Reserve Grand Cham-pion Pen of Three Bulls and People’s Choice Pen at the 2010 National Western Stock Show that were all sired by Responder.

EPD AND PERFORMANCE INFORMATION The EPDs in this catalog reflect the new base used to calculate EPDs for Limousin cattle. They now have the same look as Angus EPDs. For commercial producers this rescaling helps simplify the use of Limousin EPDs by making the set of ranking benchmarks similar for both breeds. While EPDs of the two breeds cannot be directly compared, if you know the benchmark within the Angus genetic evaluation, you also know the EPD benchmarks within the Limousin evaluation. Twice a year EPDs are recalculated to include any new data that has been submitted to NALF. This is done to keep them up to date and improve accuracies. With this in mind, expect EPDs to change on the animals you purchase. The EPDs for the Lim-Flex calves reflect the combined EPDs of the Angus Assoc. and the current information in the Limousin EPD bank from the sires and dams of the that breed. As this is a fairly new development, the accuracies will be low.
PERFORMANCE EPDs: CE: stands for calving ease direct and is important when choosing sires to produce calves born easily. The higher the number, the better. BW EPDs: express the difference in birth weight on the progeny of the bulls being compared. WW EPDs: express the difference in pounds at 205 days on the progeny of the bulls being compared. YW EPDs: do the same as WW except it is the weight at 365 days. MA EPDs: predict differences in weaning weights from daughter’s calves due to genes inherited for milk. CETM EPDs: stand for Calving Ease Total Maternal and are important for choosing sires that produce replace- ment females that give birth to their first calf easily. The higher the number, the better. SC EPDs: are expressed in centimeters of scrotal circumference, and compare the difference expected in sons of the animal. Scrotal EPDs are a good indicator of age of puberty of both the sons and daughters of the animal. CARCASS EPDs: CW EPDs: express the difference in pounds of carcass weight. REA EPDs: express the difference in square inches of rib eye area. YG EPDs: Due to the limited range and usefulness of Limousin fat thickness EPDs, they have been replaced with the more informative EPDs for yield grade. Lower YG EPDs are favored and indicate genetic differences for yield grade and cutability of offspring. MAR EPDs: express the difference in the amount of marbling or flecks of fat in the rib eye. DOLLAR VALUE: $MTI the Mainstream Terminal Index derived from WW, YW, YG and MAR. It measures differences in expected profit per carcass produced for a mainstream grid. This information should help you analyze and sort the bulls to fit your specific needs. We realize this is a lot of data to use, so please ask us if you need further assistance. We have indicated in the footnotes which bulls we feel will work on heifers as well as the bulls top EPD traits.

“The market takes care of everything. The market will make an adjustment to bring more muscular cattle to control yield grade problems. There are two ways to control yield grade, one is to feed them for less days and sacrifice carcass weight. The other is to add some CONTINENTAL INFLUENCE through crossbreeding.” “We need balance-trait cattle that marble and yield. CROSSBREEDING will keep you out of trouble and your marketing window will help dictate your genetic makeup. Tim Schiefelbein, Swift & Company

The key to successful crossing is matching mates (sires and dams) that compliment one another as opposed to magnifying potential problems. Whether you’re in need of a full-shot of muscle and efficiency from straight Limousin, or a Lim-Flex blended shot with added marbling and maternal ability, Limousin and the Lim-Flex hybrid deliver.

Progressive producers recognize the advantages of hybrid vigor from environmentally adapted cross-bred cows: • 20 percent more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed (due to hybrid
vigor for age at puberty, conception rate, survival to weaning, milk production, and weaning weight)
• 1.3 years additional cow longevity • 30 percent greater lifetime cow productivity
