A Letter from the President
4
Dear Friends,
I am delighted to introduce the Elkhart County
Community Foundation’s Annual Report for fiscal year
2011‐2012. As you read this report, you will note the
$3.3 million in grants and scholarships awarded
through ECCF’s various designated, donor‐advised,
field of interest and discretionary funds. Perhaps
you will find interesting the $4.1 million in
contributions we received. Some of you want to see
if the Foundation’s core endowment has grown; I am
disappointed to report we experienced a modest
shrink in our endowment due to both meager
investment returns and our aggressive grant‐making.
These are all important indicators of our progress and
stewardship and are data points I look for when
reading others’ annual reports.
As I edited this letter, I found myself reflecting on
the lives that our donors quietly touched last year and
am reminded of the important work being done by
our County’s grant recipients. I am thankful for the
work done by the Center for Healing and Hope in
caring for the medically uninsured. I am proud of our
commitment to preserve history and present the arts
through our investments in the Midwest Museum of
American Art, The Ruthmere Foundation, WNIT
Television, and the Elkhart Jazz Festival. I am moved
by the ministry occurring in the lives of women trying
to rebuild their lives and families with the help of
Beauty for Ashes, Guidance Ministries or Spa
Women’s Ministry.
I am inspired by the investment we have made in our
young people through grants to Boy Scouts, Back‐2‐
School Elkhart, Bashor Children’s Home, Boys and Girls
Clubs, CAPS, Child Development Center, Five Star,
Ryan’s Place, The Post, and Youth for Christ.
Furthermore, I am optimistic our annual scholarship
investment in hundreds of college students is
equipping our next generation of leaders.
I am equally inspired when I reflect on the names of
the more than 500 individuals who utilized ECCF as a
conduit for their selfless giving last year. The people
and stories represented by this list are remarkable.
As you read this report, I am honored to state that
the 2012‐2013 year is off to an excellent start and
includes yet another set of people and their
impressive stories of generosity. I am quite certain
you will be encouraged by the growth of ECCF in
next year’s Annual Report.
It has been my pleasure to serve as ECCF’s president
this past year. I want to thank the Foundation’s
board, staff, volunteers and donors for their warm
embrace and welcome. I am truly excited to work
alongside such a terrific group of people as, together,
we seek to improve the quality of life in Elkhart
County by inspiring generosity.
Warm regards,
Pete

Community Development
We strive to support our downtowns by encouraging our communities to invest in these vital economic resources.
Our downtowns provide an attractive and dynamic part of the community within which we all live, work and shop. It is our sincere belief that the revitalization of our downtowns attract visitors to the community - stimulating our economy and enhancing the overall quality of life in Elkhart County. The perk is preserving the vintage character of each community for its residents and visitors.

Education We are committed to improving the caliber of education in Elkhart County—from Pre-kindergarten through adult learning. By supporting the county-wide Horizon Education Alliance Project, we are addressing the question, “What kind of society do we want to leave to coming generations?” From back-to-school programs and worker retraining, we know our citizens must be prepared for the 21st Century and beyond.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire” - William Butler Yeats
We work to build the resiliency and effectiveness of both health and human service organizations knowing that vulnerable organizations cannot adequately serve vulnerable people.
When basic needs and the physical health and well-being of people are met, these individuals can then focus on higher-level needs that have significant consequences for long-term well-being.

In addition to the scholarships awarded from the ECCF, several scholarship funds are held with us that are directly overseen by our local High School Dollars for Scholars Chapters. We are pleased with the time these school officials and many volunteers commit each year to award thousands of dollars to graduating Elkhart County seniors pursuing post‐secondary education. We are also very thankful for the many donors who make these awards to Dollars for Scholars achievers possible. The following is a list of Elkhart County Chapter funds: Richard G. Callandar Concord HS D.A.R.E. Educational Dale Family Robert B. Deahl Dr. Herbert L. and Mrs. Phyllis M. Cormican Julius A. Decio Educational Elkhart Central HS Elkhart Memorial HS Elizabeth A.
