Device Overview
• This device is used to harness the kinetic energy of wind and transform it into electric energy
• Household appliances and everyday materials
• Total cost was about $15
How it works
• Old fan blade and bearing connected to magnet
• Black cardboard box houses the magnet with 28 gauge copper wire to transfer the energy ultimately to the light bulb
• Duct tape is amazing
Calculations
• P = 0.5 x rho x A x V²
• A = π(.09 m)²• V = 6.71 m/s• Rho = 1.1 kg/m³• Theoretical P in ≈ .63 Watts• 1.4 v/25x10‾³amps = .0209 W• (.0209 W/.63 W)x 100% ≈ 5.55 % efficient
Problems with Design
• Generating enough power• Losses due to friction• Magnet distance from wire• Finding a stable support for the apparatus• Balancing the magnet to allow a easy spin• Finding a way to support the fan blade
Summary and Conclusions
• Overall we developed good strategy and teamwork
• We found new and interesting methods of design to accomplish the required tasks
• We were successful in harnessing kinetic energy and converting it into electrical power
• Time management and communication
