High-entropy alloys are usually defined as metallic materi-als with high entropy of mixing at their disordered state. They tend to form high-entropy disordered solid solutionsand amorphous phases and get simpler microstructure.High-entropy alloys can include disordered solid solutionalloys and high-entropy metallic glasses. In addition, high-entropy ceramics based on the same “high entropy” conceptcan include carbides, nitrides, borides, and oxides. Recentadvances in high-entropy alloys and ceramics have broughtnew conceptions to develop advanced materials, whichmay potentially overcome the challenges in increasing theproperty limits for the advanced energy and environmentfriendly materials. Knowledge and understanding of thesehigh-entropy alloys and ceramics have led to the usage ofnovel tools for more detailed study such as serration andcrackling noise detection, high energy X-rays synchrotron, neutron diffraction, focus ion beam (FIB), 3-dimensionalatomic probe tomography (3D APT), density functionaltheory modeling (DFT), CALPHAD, and ab initio moleculardynamics (AIMD) modeling.

In this special issue, investigators contribute originalresearch articles as well as review articles that will stimulatethe continuing efforts to understand the structure, phaseformation rules, thermodynamics, kinetics, processing, andproperties underlying the development strategies and theevaluation of outcomes. We are particularly interested in arti-cles describing the new technologies applied for fabricatingthe materials and characterizing the structural change in themicro- and nanoscale by in situ observations.

The following areas are covered in this special issue:recent developments in high-entropy alloys, ceramics, andamorphous alloys; advances in mechanical and physicalbehaviors of high-entropy alloys; latest technologies for fabri-cating and characterizing high-entropy alloys; and serrationbehaviors and crackling noise of advanced materials.
