This map is based on the National Hierarchical Framework of Ecological Units(NHFEU) (Cleland et al. 1997).The Ecological landscapes used in this handbook are based substantially onSubsections of the NHFEU. Ecological landscapes use the same boundaries asNHFEU Sections or Subsections. However, some NHFEU Subsections werecombined to reduce the number of geographical units in the state to a manageablenumber. LTA descriptions can be found on the back page of this map.

Landtype Association Descriptions for the Superior Coastal Plain Ecological Landscape212Ic01 Apostle Islands The characteristic landform pattern is variable modified lacustrine moraine and lake shore. Soils are predominantly
well drained clay loam, and sand over clay or loam till, outwash, or sandstone. Common habitat types include ASnMi, AbArSn, hydromesic, ATM, PArVAa-Po and forested lowland.
212Ya01 Douglas Lake-Modified Till Plain
The characteristic landform pattern is undulating modified lacustrine moraine with deep v-shaped ravines. Soils are predominantly somewhat poorly drained clay over calcareous clay till or loamy lacustrine. Common habitat types include AbArSn, forested lowland and ASnMi.
212Ya02 Bayfield Lake-Modified Till Plain
The characteristic landform pattern is hilly modified lacustrine moraine with deep v-shaped ravines. Soils are predominantly well drained complex of clay, loam, and sand over clayey or loamy till, or outwash. Common habitat types include ASnMi, AbArSn, hydromesic, ATM, PArVAa-Po and forested lowland.
212Ya03 Ashland Lake-Modified Till Plain
The characteristic landform pattern is undulating modified lacustrine moraine with deep v-shaped ravines. Soils are predominantly somewhat poorly drained clay loam over calcareous clay till or loamy lacustrine. Common habitat types include AbArSn, ASnMi, hydromesic and forested lowland.
212Ya04 Iron Gogebic Dissected Lake Bench
The characteristic landform pattern is undulating modified lacustrine moraine with deep v-shaped ravines. Soils are predominantly somewhat poorly drained silt loam over calcareous silty clay loam till or loamy lacustrine. Common habitat types include AbArSn, hydromesic, ASnMi and AOCa.
212Ya07 Bibon Marsh The characteristic landform pattern is nearly level swamp with outwash plains and alluvial plains common. Soils are predominantly very poorly drained organic deposits. Common habitat type is forested lowland.
212Ya08 Kakagon/Bad River Sloughs
The characteristic landform pattern is nearly level delta and outwash plains. Soils are predominantly very poorly drained organic deposits and sandy to clayey alluvium. Common habitat type is forested lowland.
