Applications
As safety and environmental issues have becomeof greater concern to mankind, the need forassured valve shut off providing absolute andverifiable isolation are regularly becoming thestandard specification for critical applications.
Typical areas of application include offshore andonshore petro-chemical production including,gas injection, water injection, oil and gastransmission lines including airport fuellingfacilities and other areas where flammable andtoxic emissions are unacceptable.
Design
Previous common practice has been to use twovalves (Fig 1), such as plug or ball valve designs,in series with a bleed facility located betweenthem in order to establish the sealing integrity ofthe upstream valve. This configuration is far fromoptimum as more space is required, withconsiderable extra weight quite apart from theadditional maintenance requirements of havingtwo valves and the extra associated costs.
The Solent & Pratt Double Block and Bleeddesign (Fig 3) utilises our well established,patented triple offset segment valve (TOSV).Two seals are incorporated on the disc segmentthus providing sequential sealing. Thedownstream seat is not spring loaded, as is thepractice for trunnion mounted pipeline valves(Fig 2), which are also very heavy and expensive.Sealing integrity is therefore maintained shouldthe upstream seat fail. When the valve is closeda channel between the two seats connects witha purge or bleed port in the valve body which isconnected to an external outlet where an isolationvalve or relief valve may be fitted for manual orautomatic bleed. This compact Double Blockand Bleed Design negates the need for usingtwo valves in series.

Triple Offset SegmentValve (TOSV) Geometry
The shaft is offset in two directions. The disc is asegment taken from a cone where the apex is offsetfrom the centre line of the valve. No interference(rubbing) occurs between disc (segment) and seatmaking it ideal for metal seated valves.

Block & Bleed Seals
The special block and bleed seal configuration(Fig 4) consists of two metal laminate seals withan intermediate bleed channel which connects tothe bleed purge port in the valve body when thedisc/segment is in the closed positions.
