INTRODUCTION
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR LIBRARY EDUCATION, 1975-1976 (published earlierunder the title of FELLOWSHIPS, SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS-IN-AID, LOAN FUNDS ANDOTHER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR LIBRARY EDUCATION) is an annually revised fiatof awards from state library agencies, national and state library associations, and academic institutions offering undergraduate or graduate programs inlibrary education. National associations, foundations, and other agenciesknown to grant financial assistance for library education are also listed.
Not included in these listings are scholarships or awards of less thanfive hundred dollars. Listings of financial aid in the area of teacher educa-tion are not necessarily included, although this kind of assistance can some-times be used for library education.
This publication does not include all possible sourcaa of financialassistance for library education. Many other possibilities exist. Associa-tions and organizations may offer awards in amounts less than five hundreddollars. Awards not intended primarily for library education may sometimes beused for this purpose. State library agencies and state or regional libraryassociations may offer assistance to state residents which is not listed here. The following bibliography provides suggestions of additional sources of infor-mation about financial assistance. Local school tnd public libraries maysuggest other sources as well, including U.S. government publication,
ANNUAL GUIDES TO GRADUATE STUDY: bON V, LIBRARYAND INFORMATION SCIENCES, edited by Karen C.Hegener. Princeton, N.J., Peterson's Guides,Inc., annual.
CURRENT FINANCIAL AIDS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS.Cincinnati, Oh., College Opportunities, Inc:,annual,
GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL OPPORTUNTIES FORMINORITY STUDENTS. Princeton, N.J., EducationalTesting Service, 4th ed., 1972.
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR AMERICAN INDIANS. Albuquerque, N.M.,Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Department of theInterior, 1972. (ED 067187)
Certain federal program for the encouragement of training of professionallibrarfens have been available during the past several years. However, suchprograms have been funded at varying levels and in varying amounts from yearto year. Most federal assistance programs for library uducation at the pre-sent time are for persons from minority or low- income groups. These programsare normally administered through the library schools to which the scholar-ships and grants are awarded. It is suggested that interested applicants writedirectly to the school for information concerning availability of federalscholarships.
iv
6
Persons who need financial assistance to begin their college work shouldwrite directly to the institutions they are interested in attending for infor-mation on their scholarship and loan programs. High school counselors may alsoprovide information about sources of financial assistance. Since the basiceducational qualification for librarians is a master's degree in librarianship, most of the funds listed in FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR LIBRARY EDUCATION are in-tended for graduate study in librarianship or for upper-division college stu-dents. Length of time needed to complete degree requirements may be on im-por*ant factor in an individual's financial planning, and it is helpful to knowthat most graduate programs in library science can be completed in a calendaryear.
Persons applying for admission to a graduate library school should alsorequest information about its scholarship and loan program. Each library schooloffering a program accredited by the American Library Association has some fundsavailable for qualified candidates for admission to its program. Library schoolsmay also provide information on their work-study programs. Most of the schoolsoffering accredited programs have arrangements with libraries in the area whichmake possible for students to work while they are earning a degree.
A listing of libraries with trainee or work-study programs may be found inTHE BOWER ANNUAL OF LIBRARY AND BOOK TRADE INFORMATION for 1)74, pages 328-341.The annual is available in many libraries.
Any scholarship donor who has been omitted from this.sublicatior 4s :,Nv41to submit information for future editions. Only data sperlfical7.:listing can be included.
It is appropriate to thank the many members or .1-a LibrJ. iducation Div-ision who have over the years, assisted in the ,arat'on of the ann'ial publica-tion. By action of the Division Board in 1974 this work became a responsibilityof staff. Sheila Duncan, Barry Simon, and Peggy Sullivan are the staff membersresponsible for this corr:Lt edition.
