Its a very rigorous
accreditation process; they lookat every aspect o how the zoois organized, Meigs said. The
health o the animals, the educationprogram, the fnancial stability o
the institution, the conservationeorts and both the conservation
programs and message you havein place.
Meigs runs the zoo with the
aid o his wie, Jane, who is the
conservation education director,as well as with help rom JessicaBennet, animal care coordinator
and Katelyn Massarone, keepersupervisor.
The zoo has 180 animals, withabout 80 species; there are also

Monkeying around at the Millbrook Schools Trevor ZooBy Whitney Joseph
The Millbrook School is a private, coeducational college
preparatory boarding school that offers the community more than
just an excellent academic backdrop for its students. It is, in fact,
home to a fully accredited zoo, one of 215 out of 24,000 zoos and
aquariums in the United States accredited by the Association
of Zoos and Aquariums (only about 10 percent meet their
standards). According to Director Jonathan Meigs, its not an
easy standard to meet.

two lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs, black and white-ruffed lemurs, golden lion tamarins, red pandasand Victoria-legged cichlids. Thereis also a threatened-species on site,a Geoffroys marmoset.
Zoos can be Noahs Arcs forthe world, Meigs said. Theycan help. But what really has tohappen is the natural habitat hasto be protected and sometimesexpanded. Captive breeding is ashort-term answer to keep thebreeding stock alive and thenhopefully reintroduced into thewild. I think natural ecosystemsare the healthiest with as many ofthe original species as possible.
When you take species out of theirecosystems you can threaten thoseecosystems. I think you have tofocus on natural areas and cantbe working in isolation behind zoofences.
Theres a lot to learn at theTrevor Zoo, which is greatfor the students at MillbrookSchool. Theres a program thatallows those students hands-onexperience, as part of the schoolscommunity service initiative.Currently about 50 students get toprovide care for the animals, whichMeigs said is an unusual situation.
Were unique to havestudents in an accredited zoo,he said. Nobody has a programcomparable to ours with kidsworking directly with the animalson a regular basis. I think we arethe only school-owned zoo as
well. We think its very special. Ithink whats also special is that wehave been able to develop the zooover the last few years as a greatresource for people in the area.
And the people know it. The zoowelcomes roughly 25,000 visitorsannually, with about 5,000 schoolchildren attending in the spring onclass trips. Families also frequent
the zoo, which is busiest on theweekends; it is also open year-round. Admission is $5 for adults,$3 for children and seniors, thereare annual passes for $55 andsummer passes for $40.
Jane Meigs, whose focus is onconservation, said Trevor Zoo isa special place to visit, and ideallythose who do get to learn more
than about just the animals.I hope visitors leave thinking,
Aha, theres something I can do tomake a difference in the world, she said. Coming here is aboutmore than just fun.
Jonathan Meigs praised hiswifes efforts.

Cary Institute: A unique environmental resourceBy Dianne Engleke
The graceful early 19thcentury Gifford House with itsgift shop, surrounding gardens

World-class science has had a home in Millbrook, New York
since 1983, when Gene Likens founded the Institute of Ecosystem
Studies at the Mary Flagler Cary Arboretum. The Arboretum
was on land once belonging to the heiress to the Standard Oil
fortune, and then a project of the New York Botanical Garden.
an internationally recognizedcenter for ecological research and
education. The Institute becamean independent not-for-profitcorporation in 1993.
The mission of research andeducation continues under the newdirector, William Schlesinger, whobecame president of the renamed
Cary Institute of EcosystemStudies in 2007. In a talk at theCary in 2009, Schlesinger spokeof his first noticing environmental
changes, including declines in thepopulations of common species.
As a young scientist, he hadstudied plant succession in the
southeastern United States andsaw how vegetation responded tolarge-scale environmental changes,
not just to those in the immediatearea. What were these changes andwhat was responsible for them ?
The search for answers to
these and other critical questionstakes place every day at theCary Institute, and in the field. Its website talks of the science
behind environmental solutions. In that spirit, the staff at the Carystudies how ecosystems work, with focal points including air and
water pollution, climate change, invasive species, and the ecologicaldimensions of infectious disease.

Looking for some culture? Doctor Hammond knowsall about it, especially when it comes to convertingthe milk from the seventy cows on his farm to yogurt.
Mmmm, well take strawberry please. If you want some,
youll nd it at Maronas.
Most people around know the doctor for hisveterinary practice in Mabbettsville. Hesbeen at it for forty years now, became a vet so hecould buy the farm hes run for thirty-two of those.
For all that time, Doctor Hammond has kept
accounts with the Bank of Millbrook, business and
personal, and we couldnt be prouder than to have
always been there for a longstanding member of our
community.
Forty years is a long time for a
relationship you might even call it
a special anniversary. We gure thats why
Doc wore a tie.
We believe in the benets ofsupporting local culture
