INTRA-FETAL VARIX OF THE UMBILICAL VEIN
Varix of the intra-fetalumbilical vein is defined as a focal dilatation of theIntra-abdominal portion of the umbilical vein, with a transverse diameter at least 1.5 times greater than thediameter of the intrahepatic umbilical vein.

INTRA ABDOMINAL FETAL UMBILICAL VEIN
INTRAHEPATIC PART OF UMBILICAL VEIN
Choledochal, hepatic, mesenteric, urachal, and ovariancysts, a distended gallbladder and fluid-filled segments ofthe gastrointestinal or urinary tract.
The identification ofvenous blood flow by Doppler examination confirms thediagnosis.
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSISINTRA-FETAL VARIX OF
UMBILICAL VEIN
SPIRAL CT MRI

A hypothesis for the cause of this uncommon dilatation ofthe umbilical vein is an intrinsic weakness of the wall of Extra-hepatic portion of umbilical vein , possibly at the site where the rightumbilical vein normally obliterates during the embryogenesis.

These lesions require follow-up in order to exclude or diagnose the signs of hemodynamic deterioration or cardiac failure. The transient appearance of signs of heart failure like Cardiomegaly and hydrops suggest that the intra-abdominal umbilical vein dilatation could cause an increase in cardiac work, possibly by increasing preload, which can lead tocardiac failure.
