Dar Ai: My cousin“Kelly” went from a rottenmarriage to a horrible rela-tionship, with no break inbetween.

During this past year, her boyfriend has cheated, lied and threatened her. Iwas her shoulder to cry onand finally had too muchand told her how stupid thewhole situation was. Thisguy doesn’t love her. Heuses her. He has nowhereelse to go because he paysso much child support forthe four childrenhe has from dif-ferent womenthat he has noth-ing left to live on.Kelly feels sorryfor him.

Unfortunately, now that I’ve toldher exactly whateveryone else inour family wassaying behind herback, I’m the badguy, and no oneis speaking to me. There isa family graduation com-ing up, and we all will betogether. Do I act like noth-ing happened or, better yet, tell them all to grow up? Idon’t want to cause prob-lems for the graduate, butthis is ridiculous. What doyou propose? -- Th Wst

Dar Wst: Honesty isnot always the best policy, especially when it accom-

plishes nothing but hurt feel-ings. It obviously felt goodto get this off your chest, but it cost you. Telling allthe relatives to “grow up”will cost you a little more. There are diplomatic waysto get your point across, andif you don’t want to alienatethe entire family and ruinthe graduation, you mighttry utilizing some of them.Start with, “I’m so sorry Icreated a rift. I was simplyexhausted from listening toKelly, and I took it out onher. Please forgive me.”

Dar Ai: Severalmonths ago, I lost the love

of my life. We were in theCaribbean for my son’s wed-ding when a blood clot madeits way to her heart and lungs, and in seven minutes, thewoman I had been married tofor 33 years was dead on thestreets of Nassau.

Once back home, myfriends and family surround-ed me. One by one, theyasked me to their homesfor good food and caringcompany. During two of these visits, however, thehosts turned to me withstraight faces and said they“knew what I was goingthrough” because they each

went through a divorce. Icould not believe my ears. How could they compare adivorce with the death of a beloved spouse? When Iattended group grief coun-seling sessions, several inthe group mentioned they

had heard similar remarks.I am here to scream out

loud that in no way is adivorce anywhere close tothe death of a loved one.No matter the amount of pain, you can see yourdivorced spouse if you wantto, maybe even reconnectsomeday. I will never, everbe able to touch or see mylove again. Death is forever.-- Th Saddst Ma i thWrld

Dar Sad: Our deepestcondolences on your loss.

Your well-meaningfriends and rela-tives do not intendto minimize yourgrief, which isconsiderable. Theyare simply tryingto connect withthe pain of beingalone. But youare right -- thesethings are not thesame. We appre-ciate your tellingour readers to be

careful not to make suchcomparisons in their effortsto empathize.

Dar Ai: “Unhappy80-Year-Old Woman” right-ly gave power of attorney toone of her children whenshe was ill, but then thechild sold her belongingsand still controls her moneyand her mail. Please tell hershe has the right to revokethat power of attorney or

grant a limited power of attorney. This is a form of elder abuse, intentional ornot. -- D.N. in Toledo

Dar Tld: Thank youfor the excellent sugges-tion.
