TEXT: John 15:1-11
Where do we find strength for life’s greatest challenges?
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him,
he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5 ESV

Conclusion:
Open:
•Som
e people love to have a vegetable garden or flowers. D
o you have a “green thum
b?” How
many houseplants do you have? M
ost everyone loves garden fresh food, but not all grow
their own. W
hich one are you?
Dig: Scripture &
Discussion
Read John 15:1-11.
Fill in the blanks from the m
orning lesson:
Strength comes not from
___________; strength comes from
_________
Read Paul’s teaching about acknowledging w
eakness in 2 Corinthians 12:1-10. W
hat does it mean to be conceited? W
hat happens when w
e focus on ourselves - our strengths and accom
plishments? C
ompare that w
ith acknowledging
our weaknesses.
Nam
e a person in the Bible whom
you appreciate, even though they had a w
eakness. How
did God use them
in spite of their weakness? W
hy do you appreciate them
?
Jesus said in John 15:2 that “every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it m
ay bear more fruit. W
hat does it mean to accept G
od’s pruning in our lives? If tim
e permits, see also H
ebrews 12:11 and Jam
es 1:2-4.
No doubt a key statem
ent in John 15 is verse five: “I am the vine; you are the
branches. Whoever abides in m
e and I in him, he it is that bears m
uch fruit, for apart from
me you can do nothing.” (ESV
) Other versions use the term
remain.
Which one do you prefer - abide or rem
ain? Why? M
ark in your Bible (circle or underline) the ten tim
es the word appears in the first ten verses.
Reflect: M
ake It Real
Can you recall a tim
e when G
od pruned you, and even though it was
painful, you know it w
as for your benefit?
What m
ade you able to see this experience as God’s pruning?
Were you able to understand this as it w
as happening or only after it was
over?
To abide or remain seem
s to go against everything that we’re used to hearing.
So much of w
hat we hear is about perform
ing; making the grade, closing
the sale, doing something. D
id you grow up thinking you had to perform
or produce in order to receive G
od’s blessing and strength?
Even Moses struggled to take G
od at His w
ord. In Exodus 3, we have their
conversation revealing Moses’ hesitation and G
od’s replies. Yet, even after G
od saying He w
ould be with him
, Moses continued to question G
od. In fact, their conversation continues into chapter four w
ith God becom
ing angry w
ith Moses. Is there a little bit of M
oses in you - do you still struggle w
ith taking God at H
is word? W
hy?
In this critical last mom
ent with the disciples, Jesus chose to reveal that H
e is the “vine and w
e are the branches.” We are to “abide” in H
im. W
hy save this for last? W
hy is this so important?
When do you feel m
ost connected to God? W
hy?
When do you feel m
ost disconnected to God? W
hy?
What advice w
ould you give a new C
hristian about how to “abide in Christ?”
To help me abide in C
hrist, this week I w
