DEAR COLLECTORSWe still have your safety in mind
At Canada Post, our priority continues to be the safety and health of our customers, employees and communities. Some of the temporary changes made to the stamp program and the way we distribute new issues to postal outlets will continue to remain in effect until further notice. To ensure you don’t miss any new issues, be sure to order your stamps online at canadapost.ca/shop.
A print version of Details No. 5 has been mailed to subscribers. Printed copies are not available in postal outlets, but there’s an online version on our website.
This issue of Details features our annual Diwali stamp, as celebrations of this Festival of Lights begin for Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist Canadians. Also, in time for Remembrance Day, we’ve featured a work by Mary Riter Hamilton, Canada’s first unofficial woman battlefield artist, whose story has finally come to light thanks to the work of dedicated historians.
Happy (and safe!) collecting,
Jim Phillips, Director, Stamp Services

This colourful stamp expresses the spirit of Diwali, a joyous festival observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and other communities around the world. This year, the five-day celebration begins November 14.
Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is celebrated for many reasons, but a common theme is the triumph of good over evil. For many, it is a time to welcome happiness and good fortune. Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word , meaning rows of lights, and refers to the popular practice of placing
diyas, or oil lamps, throughout homes and temples. Other traditions include illuminating the sky with fireworks, exchanging gifts and sweet treats, and decorating entranceways with colourful geometric Rangoli patterns made with such materials as rice, sand, powder or flower petals.
Des igned by Gera ld Querub in a t Ent ro Communications, the stamp features a diya and a vibrant geometric background in the shape of a Rangoli.

Issued to mark Remembrance Day, this stamp reproduces Trenches on the Somme (1919) by Mary Riter Hamilton, Canada’s first unofficial woman battlefield artist.
Born in Teeswater, Ontario, in 1867 and widowed in her 20s, Riter Hamilton developed a reputation as a distinguished painter – and applied to the Canadian War Memorials Fund to be sent to the frontlines as a war artist.
Although her application was refused, Hamilton was commissioned by the Amputation Club of British Columbia in 1919 to paint the battered
battlefields of France and Belgium for its veterans’ magazine. Hamilton worked endless hours outdoors with poor shelter and little food or money. She produced more than 300 paintings, drawings and etchings of the widespread devastation and arduous reconstruction efforts, and was awarded France’s prestigious Ordre des Palmes académiques in 1922.
In 1925, Hamilton returned to Canada, eventually donating most of her work to what is now Library and Archives Canada. Later hospitalized for ill health caused, in part, by the conditions she had endured on the battlefield, she died in 1954.
