TWENTISEVENTH (27ND) ANNUAL REPORT (July, 2017 to June, 2018)
DEPARTMENT OF
VETERINARY PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY
DGCN COLLEGE OF VETERINARY & ANIMAL SCIENCES

(2018)
1. INTRODUCTION
The discipline of Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology came into existence as one of the
constituents of the erstwhile Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the time of the
inception of the College in July, 1986. The discipline gained the status of an independent
Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology w.e.f. July 1st, 1991 becoming one of the core
subjects in the Veterinary profession.
The Department attained the status of Postgraduate Department with the start of PG
program leading to M.V.Sc. in Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology w.e.f. July 1996–97.
Since then 29 students have been passed out with M.V.Sc. degree. The thrust areas of the
Department are:
• Studies on the efficacy of medicinal plants of Himachal Pradesh for animal disease control
• Studies on the poisonous plants of Himachal Pradesh and their antidotal therapy
It is evident from this 27nd Annual Report that the Department is making steady progress
since its establishment in 1991. However, there is shortage of teaching and technical supporting
staff. In order to meet the future challenges and as per new VCI recommendations, the faculty
and technically trained supporting staff need to be provided.

c. Summary of research finding during the year
➢ Degradation kinetics and stress degradation study of amoxicillin trihydrate was performed
in vitro in veterinary preparations (Intamox 3.5 & Moxikind-SB 4.5) using high
performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The degradation rate constants of
amoxicillin trihydrate were 29.05, 34.03 & 37.19 per hour under acidic, alkaline and
oxidative conditions, respectively.
➢ Half-life (0.0245, 0.0391, 0.0251 h) and shelf-life (0.0037, 0.0059, 0.0038 h) of Intamox
3.5 was significantly higher than t1/2 (0.159, 0.204, 0.0186 h) and t90 (0.0024, 0.0031,
0.0028 h) of Moxikind-SB 4.5 under acidic, alkaline and oxidative conditions,
respectively.
➢ After studying stress stability and degradation kinetics of both veterinary preparations,
Intamox 3.5 was found to be more stable than Moxikind-SB 4.5 under varying conditions
of pH at 250C.
