U10 water quality checker
Used to check parameters like pH, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, temperature and
salinity. All sensors are located in the Probe. This is the only part of the equipment that needs to
come in touch with water.
Atago hand refractometer
Used to check the salinity of a water sample. Can be adjusted with pure destilled water. Shows
the salinity in ppm (parts per million) and .

Secchi disk
A measuring device to check
the transparency of the water.
The transparency can be usedas an indicator for pollution,
amount of undissolved matter
as well as an index for the
quantity of planctic organisms
in the water.
Water sampler
To get samples of different depths of an aquatic ecosystem, you need a water sampler. It gets
lowered down to the specific depth you want to collect a sample. By sending the messenger
down, the mechanism gets triggered and the water in the tube is trapt.

Grab sampler
Sampling soft sediments like sand and mud with all the accompanying biota. When the shovel
reaches the ground, the mechanism gets triggered, the shovel closes.
Hand corer
To get sediment cores of mud or sand (soft
sediments) an all organisms in it. The core
samples have a specified volume for
qualitative analysis of the sediments and the
organisms per defined volume of sediment.

Plankton net
Used to catch plankton in open waters. Different kind of plankton nets allow you to catch
plankton in specific depth and of specific size.
Extec light meter
The sensor of the Extec light
meter collects data of light
intensity. The scales of
measurement can be changed
with the keyboard.
Sensordata current meter
Collects data about current speed
and direction. Can store data to
gain all information needed
within one application.

Hondex depth meter
An echo sounder to gatter data of depth and bottom profile. The transducer unit sends sonic
waves to the seafloor and collects its reflection. Shows things between the transducer and the
seafloor, like fishes or submarines.
MSF
Mask, Snorkel and Fins. Used for observation near
the surface or sampling in shallow water.
SCUBA gear
SCUBA = self contained underwater breathing apparatus.
Allows the scientist to stay underwater for longer periods
of time. Useful in observation and research of the behaviorof animals under water.

Underwater cameras
Underwater cameras (video + photo)
are used for observation, identification
and documentation of underwaterecosystems and lifeforms.
Transect line
A transect line is an important tool in
ecological research. It is used to gather
statistically relevant data of an
ecosystem without sampling the whole
area but only defined parts of it.
Sampling quadrats
Sampling quadrats are used to gather
information about a specified area. The more
organisms you have to look at in an area, the
smaler are the quadrats you choose for
sampling. The quadrat is usually subdivided into
smaller subareas.

Manta board
Used for general assessment of larger
areas. Drawn by a boat, the scientist
wearing scuba/snorkle equipment canpartially gather data about an unknown
area.
Do/pH Probe
Fore measurement of dissolved oxygen as
well as pH of a water sample. The sensor is
very sensitive so handle with care.
