Features and Benefits Table 3 Features, Functions and Benefits of the PowerEdge 2650 Server

Feature Benefit

Performance

Dual Xeon processors at 2GHz, 2.4GHz, 2.8GHz, 3.06GHz and 3.2GHz with 533MHz front side bus (FSB)

The dual Xeon microprocessors with 533MHz front side bus (FSB) provide the performance attributes that are necessary to support compute and memory intensive applications.

ServerWorks GC LE chipset

Performs memory control and provides a PCI-X interface to the local processor bus. GC-LE supports 5 PCI buses, three of which are PCI-X capable, as well as 2 memory channels designed to reduce the latency between processor and memory communications.

Read-ahead and write back cache support embedded RAID

The read-ahead and write-back cache support is designed to allow faster access to data than read-through and write-through cache. This feature prevents a bottleneck from forming at the RAID processor by storing data in cache as soon as it is processed instead of waiting for the slower disk subsystem to complete its task before the RAID processor proceeds. Scales performance by improving parallel instruction throughput relative to IA-32 and opens opportunities for future performance scaling, e.g., multithreading, etc.

Embedded dual channel Ultra3 (U 160) SCSI controller

Embedded dual channel Adaptec 7899 SCSI controller provides 160MB/s interface from system bus to hard drives. Both channels are routed internally to support up to five internal SCSI hard drives. Customers can take advantage of both the internal channels and split backplane features, which enable them to separate the disk subsystems for different purposes. For example, many customers like to mirror their OS on two drives and use the remaining three drives for data storage. The split backplane and dual SCSI channels split the data paths thus providing an opportunity to experience better performance. Ability to address vast, flat address space in memory (up to 1024TB), localizes applications and data to memory, close to CPU core which is designed to improve performance by reducing hard drive access latencies

Availability

Optional hot-plug redundant power (1+1) and hot-plug SCSI hard drives

Allows power supply and SCSI hard drive replacement without having to bring the server down.

Optional dual channel RAID on motherboard (ROMB) with battery backed cache

Optional embedded RAID feature can be activated with the addition of a RAID hardware-enabling key to provide a low cost way to protect your data. Additionally, the ROMB solution doesn’t consume a PCI slot, which provides customers with more configuration flexibility. Battery backed cache preserves cache

Feature Benefit

contents allowing data to be written to disk in the event of a power loss.

Hot-plug redundant cooling

The system uses enough fans to provide enough airflow to cool the system components in the event of a single fan failure. Although fans fail infrequently, the outcome is catastrophic for the server components. As such, this feature provides investment protection.

Online spare bank memory

The server management will monitor the system memory to detect single bit errors. Once the number of errors surpasses a user-defined threshold the system BIOS will initiate a fail over to a spare bank of memory. This feature is an option that requires a customer to deploy two Dims that will not be utilized unless a fail over is necessary.

DDR ECC memory with ChipKill technology

This feature allows the system to tolerate multi-bit memory errors of a memory chip on a DIMM, including failure of an entire chip. Not only does the ECC logic in the chipset correct any single bit error in memory, it can also correct up to 4 bits in error from the same memory chip. This is important because essentially any failure mode of a memory chip results in a correctable error and allows the system to continue operating without interruption.

Dual embedded Gigabit NICs

Provides fail over support and maximizes I/O throughput of embedded NICs. Embedded NICs are backward compatible to 10/100 speeds.

Expandability

Up to 12GB of SDRAM The system supports a minimum of 256MB up to 12GB of DDR DRAM and 2:1 memory interleaving, which reduces memory latency and thus helps to improve system performance in some applications. Many Internet and network infrastructure applications benefit from processor and memory performance improvements.

Up to 5 x 1” hot-plug SCSI hard drives

The 5 x 1” hot-plug SCSI hard drives allow for up to 730GB of internal storage capacity at 10,000 and 15,000 ROMs.

One open 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X I/O slot and two open 64-bit/100MHz PCI-X I/O slots

The three I/O slots enable customers to expand the functionality of the system beyond what is supported with the embedded feature set. The expansion can be achieved by adding PCI and/or PCI-X cards.

Manageability

Remote Management The system supports Embedded Remote Access (ERA), which provides remote and “out of band” management without consuming a PCI slot. ERA also provides customers with integrated headless support meaning that customers can deploy their servers without a KVM switch and, thus, helps to reduce the total acquisition and deployment costs. ERA also addresses the customers’ need to manage their remote server infrastructure from a centralized location, which can help reduce the TCO of the server.

Page 10: Dell™ PowerEdge™ 2650...INFOBrief Dell PowerEdge 2650 The PowerEdge 2650 delivers a combination of performance, availability and configuration flexibility that make it ideal for

Feature Benefit

Systems Management The embedded systems management (ESM4) detects system events such as fan failures and temperature and voltage problems. ESM4 also generates alerts and allows administrators to detect and remedy problems.

Dell OpenManage IT Assistant (ITA)

Intuitive browser-based application makes management of clients easier.

Dell Server Assistant (DSA)

DSA is designed to make OS installation quick and easy, and provide customers with “one stop shopping” for setting up a PowerEdge server, including providing the latest Dell drivers, RAID and NIC configurations, Dell diagnostics, and electronic documentation.

Serviceability

Tool-less Chassis The tool-less chassis allows easy access to internal system components, which makes it easy to service and maintain. This improvement can translate into a lower TCO for the server.

Cable-less design The SCSI backplane blindmates to the motherboard, eliminating the need for cables. This not only improves serviceability of the system, but also improves airflow. The improved airflow can help to lower the operating temperature of the server. Further, the reliability of most parts improves at lower temperatures.

New active bezel The new bezel will display the Dell logo backlit in blue when the server is functioning properly. If the system encounters any type of failure, the Dell logo light will go off and a yellow caution light will emit indicating a problem. This feature is designed to make it easier for a customer to identify a problem server in the data center.

System LCD panel The system includes an LCD panel on the system faceplate located behind the system bezel. The LCD panel is a 10-digit display that produces error codes and text messages. The feature makes it easy for customers to diagnose problems locally.

System Identification button on rear of chassis

The system includes an LED on the back of the server that mimics the functionality of the LED on the bezel. Additionally, the LED functions as a system locator. Simply press a button on the front of the chassis or generate a command via OpenManage and the LED will blink allowing system administrators to easily identify a system in a rack full of 2U servers. Once the system is identified, push a button and the light will stop blinking.

KVM ports on front of chassis

Single PS/2 connector and USB connector (for keyboard and mouse) and video port on the front of the chassis for customers who use keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) carts in their data centers. Front accessible KVM ports can provide two benefits: 1) improved serviceability because customers do not need access to the rear of the rack, and 2) simplified cable management by reducing the need for KVM cables on every system attached to switches (i.e. customers only have to plug into the system being serviced).
