COMMONWEALTH GAMES:
Students and staff have all enjoyed following former Drury
School student Daniel Hunter competing in the
Commonwealth Games over the past few days. Daniel
made the final in the 4 x 100m relay, 50m butterfly, 100m
freestyle and narrowly missed out in the 50m freestyle
final. He registered several PB’s and also a new NZ
record in the 100m freestyle. Well done indeed.
Growth through Learning
Issue 6
11 April 2018
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Kia ora. Greetings from school in the final week of a very
busy and enjoyable first term. School finishes at the normal
time this Friday with Term 2 commencing on Monday 30
April.
WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST STUDENT:
A warm welcome to Luka Thompson and his family. We
hope you will enjoy your association with Drury School.
STAFFING:
At the start of Term 2 we will be welcoming Mrs Faith
Lunjevich who will be teaching Year 6 in Room 18.
Sincere appreciation must be given to Mrs Jill Coleman
who has done an excellent job maintaining Room 18
throughout Term 1. Mrs Coleman will be reverting to
her previous part time teaching position at our school.
We will also be welcoming back Mrs Jan Ahern who will
be teaching our next new entrant class in Room 1. Mrs
Ahern has previously taught at Drury School (most
recently last year) and it will be great to have her teaching
skills back on our staff again.
ANZAC DAY:
Red Poppies are available from the school office for a
donation this week.
Anzac Day falls during the school
holidays. Wednesday 25 April is
Anzac Day and we would love as
many students as possible marching in
the parade again this year and joining
in with our choir. Meet in front of
Murphys for photographs at
10.30am. All students must be in
full school uniform, including
black shoes. Jumpers are only to be
worn if it is really cold. Poppies
should be worn on the left side.
BOT UPDATE ON NEW PRINCIPAL:
The Board wish to advise that the position of Drury School
Principal has been advertised. Following the closing date of
23 April the Board will begin working through the process
with our consultants, with the hope of our new Principal
commencing at the start of Term 3.
3-WAY CONFERENCES: It was very pleasing to see approximately 90% of our families
in attendance at the 3-Way Conferences recently. These are
a vital part of our school-home partnership and we do
encourage those who did not attend to definitely make
contact with your child’s teacher at some stage.
FODS RIDE TO SCHOOL - THIS FRIDAY:
This tremendous event is scheduled for this Friday
morning when our lucky raffle winners will be picked up
from home by an amazing array of vehicles. Fingers
crossed for good weather. Thanks to Mark Bolton for
his co-ordination and organisation of vehicles for this
year’s event and to those parents assisting with ticket
sales and morning tea for the drivers.
Congratulations to the following students and
thanks to everyone who supported the raffle
which raised $1,556.00.

STUDENT SUCCESS:
Well done to Reuben and Cooper Smith who took part
recently in a motorcross competition in Tauranga with
over 300 primary, intermediate and secondary students.
Cooper competed in the 8-10 year class, claiming 4th
place. Reuben was in the 11-12 year division against 32
other riders and was placed 7th overall.
Olivia Annabell competed at NZ Horse of the Year and
achieved Runner Up Welsh Pony of the Year (i.e. 2nd in
NZ) and was 6th in Saddle Hunter Pony of the Year.
This was particularly special as Olivia has only been

My Abandoned Place …. by Tyler-Marie Harris: Cold as winter could get, shadows everywhere, away from all the
drama. As the vines surround me they start waving as the wind hugs them and rocks them back and forward. It’s so calm
around here but the best thing about my abandoned place is I can change it to anything I want. I could even go to the
underworld and save people that did not deserve to go there.
By Ainsley Kairua: Did you ever follow your older siblings into the forest not even knowing what you were getting your-
self into? My heart started pounding as they pushed away all the leaves and branches in their path. I started getting excited
all of a sudden, the adrenaline in my veins just started cursing through my body. All went silent. I couldn’t hear anyone
laughing or cheering. I couldn’t even hear the twigs getting crushed or the sound of leaves crackling beneath my siblings’
feet. I started feeling alone. I shouldn’t have looked away, not for a second.
My Magical Place …. by Jakob Court: It was a bright and sunny summer morning. I woke up but really tired. I was in
no mood to do anything. So I just sat on the couch, waiting for something to happen. Meanwhile I entered my secret place.
It’s so secret I’m the only proper life form to enter it! It’s fabulous, unique and heavenly. It’s everything you could imagine!
When I enter I’m usually in a split world - a half is LEGO and the other half is Star Wars. When I enter I get a free light-
saber and I hop straight into action.
My Secret Place … by Jayvis Hui: The closet. Just kidding - too much dust. But great question. Where is my secret
place? I don’t really have one but mostly it’s my own imagination. So it looks like anything I want it to be, like a floating
house drifting into the galaxy, or a big cloud world filled with fun, so it should be suitable for everyone. I literally have a
world inside me.
