CAMDEN Haven Surf LifeSaving Club has “come to therescue” of the iconic King Of TheMountain race up North Brotherwhich was faced with theprospect of not having an organ-iser and lapsing.

Surf club treasurer GlenO’Brien has assumed the posi-tion of race director and has setthe race date for August 18 2013,subject to obtaining the neces-sary approvals.

Camden Haven SLSC is hon-oured to be able to “come to therescue” of the event and is alsoexcited at the prospect of beingable to use the event as a much-needed fundraising opportunityfor the club, he said.

Martin Newell of LJ HookerLaurieton has stepped up be theprize money sponsor againalong with the Camden HavenChamber of Commerce, which isgreat news, Glen said.

Glen has contacted theCamden Haven Chamber ofCommerce and is hopeful ofobtaining its support and somesponsorship for the event. “We

require sponsors to coverexpenses such as insurance, toi-lets and a bus on the day,” hesaid.

The event has been popular inthe past and should attract plen-ty of out-of-town participantsand their families as well as anarray of locals, which is greatnews for our local businesses.

L J Hooker Laurieton washappy to again provide the prizemoney for such as good cause,Martin said.

This year will be the fourthtime the real estate agency hassponsored the event, he said,and in the past the gruelling racehas raise more than $5000 forCystic Fibrosis research.

It is good to see the surf clubnow stepping up to run theevent and use it as a fund-raisingvehicle for the vital service thelifesavers provide for CamdenHaven swimmers.

The race brings a lot of visi-tors into town, with past com-petitors coming from as farafield as Brisbane, Newcastle,Sydney and Canberra, he said.

FOOTBALL codes have combined to host LukeO’Neill and friends benefit events.

Camden Haven Touch, Camden Haven JuniorRugby League and Camden Haven Bombers AFL willhold the Luke O’Neill memorial charity shield, atouch football family funday at Laurieton sportingfields on Sunday June 16 kicking off at 9.30am and afamily fun night on Saturday June 22 at the LaurietonUnited Services Club.

You are invited to put a team of 11 players in thetouch day. Nominate your team to Kaine Faddy on0428112853 by Wednesday June 12.

It will be a 7 a side comp with a mixture of Camdenhaven and Kendall touch footy rules. Cost will be $110per side.

Each side will play at least 3 games each and at theend of the day the top 2 sides will play off for the LukeO’Neill memorial shield. You must be born in 2002 orearlier to play.

There will be a dash for cash with prizes to thefastest lady and man, a best dressed prize for the bestlook alike league /afl player or personality.

A full canteen and BBQ will be running on the dayalong with a few raffles with great prizes to win.

For the kids there will be jumping castles, a giantslide and face painting. Purchase a $5 wrist band forunlimited access to these rides. There is also horizon-tal bungee and the fly wall which is opened to adultsand kids for a small extra fee.

A deejay will be playing music through out the dayso dust of the joggers get a side together and comedown and have a great day in memory of a championyoung bloke! If you’re not in a side and would like toplay give Kaine a ring and he will do his best to get youinto a side.

Saturday June 22 will be a night of fun and laughs atthe LUSC. The cost $15 per ticket which includes fin-ger food and a chance to win a couple of great luckydoor prizes.

Up for auction are signed box-ing gloves from Jeff Fenech and Kostya Tszyu, framedand signed NRL jerseys, deep sea fishing charter tick-ets in Coffs Harbour, a round of golf for two atBonville golf course, Pacific Bay Resort Coffs Harbourholiday and lots more. Luke rememberedin charity shield

LUSC 1ST GRADE V KEMPSEY RANGERSI must apologise to those inconvenienced by the

unfortunate forfeit in reserve grade last weekend. With just 6 players available, the first graders would

have had to double up. The 1st Grade game was thebest we have witnessed for quite a while. The rangerscame out throwing everything they had at us. Waywardshooting on their part and determined defence by uskept the score to nil all at the break.

Once again, at the start of the second half, they cameat us for the first 10 minutes. By now we began to cre-ate some raids on them and 15 minutes in we wererewarded. A long ball from Emerson found AlanWilliams (who was menacing up front). He got a crossto Ryan Squires who planted the pill into the net. 10minutes later Mitch Williams beat a couple of playersout on the left, got the ball to Alan, and a one two sawMitch score our second and silence the Rangers outfit.They came at us once again and we hung on until thelast 30 seconds. A consolation goal final - final score 2-1. Some of the Redbacks crew were still singing thesong at about 11pm back at our sponsors house(LUSC). Too many fine games were had by all the play-ers to mention. However, the big fella between thesticks had a pearler. Next week home to Old Bar.Thanks to our supporters.
