DATA STORAGEData storage is where
we put data in a known place which we can come back to later and get the data back
again.
Data can be
temporary or
permanent.
Any data storage device; that stores or
reads data from any medium, including the medium itself.
RANDOM ACCESS MEMORYCommonly known as RAM
Used to store data temporarilyVery fast reading/writing of dataStores data that are currently in useVolatile memory
BACKING STORAGE DEVICE
Data is permanently stored
Non-Volatile memory
Used to store data for a long term.
Slower reading/writing of data
BACKING UP DATABacking up is the process of making copies of your files. It prevents us from losing our work and files.Backups should be stored in a different location from the original. To back up data we need :
Storage device: writes or reads data from storage mediumStorage medium: hardware that holds the data
Some of the reasons why we backup data are:
Data can be accidently copied over or deleted
Data can be lost due to damage to the device
Hackers could delete our files
Storage device can be destroyed
Storage device can be lost
WAYS OF STORING AND READING DATASerial access
Direct access
Sequential Access Random Access
Very slow method of accessing data
We can access the data quickly
To find the data we have to search from first in the sequence
Data has been stored and can straightly go to the data
Used in old magnetic tapes and batch processing systems.
Used in Hard disk drives,CDs and DVDs
Ex: Music cassettes, Video cassettes, Backup tape catridges
Ex:USB memory sticks, Flash memory,Blu-ray discs
STORAGE MEDIA
STORAGE MEDIA IS DIFFERENT FROM STORAGE DEVICE.DEVICES THAT HOLDS THE DATA ARE KNOWN AS STORAGE MEDIA.STORAGE MEDIA IS A PERMANENT STORAGE AND WILL HOLD THE DATA EVEN WHEN THE COMPUTER IS SWITCHED OFF.STORAGE MEDIA CAN EITHER BE :
INTERNAL• EXTERNAL.
STORAGE MEDIA ARE OF THREE TYPES;
• MAGNETIC STORAGE MEDIA
• OPTICAL STORAGE MEDIA
• SOLID STATE MEDIA
MAGNETIC STORAGE MEDIAMagnetic media holds data magnetically. The surface area of the media are magnetized so that they can hold bits of data. The device that reads the media can also read the bits held on the surface area.It uses a magnetic surface area in order to hold bits of information.
OPTICAL STORAGE MEDIA
All the mediums the use a light source to write/read data onto a disc is known as optical media.
Data is read by shining the laser beam onto the disc.
It holds data by burning dots onto the surface with a high powered laser.
It stores data on a disc as a number of data dots that can be read using light.
SOLID STATE STORAGE MEDIA
It is also known as flash memory. It is the smallest form of data storage. They are very small and robust. They use less power and provides us
with faster data transfer and access times.
Any memory device based on electric circuits.
Any memory device that has no moving parts.
