BackgroundCritical Friends is amethod forprofessionaldevelopmentrelyingonpeerobservationandfeed-back.It’saDIY,no-fusswayofgivingin-sightsandopportunitiestoimmediatelyim-proveyourteaching.

AtStockholmUniversityLibrary,wehaverunasuccessfulCriticalFriendsprogrammeforafewterms.OurCriticalFriendsapproachhasalso inspiredother libraries todo the same.However, over timewe found that our ownpeerfeedbackfelttoosafeanddidnotchal-lengeourideastothesameextent.Togetherwith Uppsala University Library, we startedupaCritical Friends team to collaborateonpeer-to-peerteachingevaluation.

Friendship EffectHasfriendshipplayedaroleinthesuccessofour Critical Friends programme?The teach-inglibrariansatStockholmUniversityLibraryareaclose-knitteamofteachinggeneralistsandalsogoodfriends.EveryoneintheteamhastakenanactivepartasaCriticalFriend.

UppsalaUniversityLibrary,withmoreauton-omousbranchlibraries,hadfewerstaffsign-ingupfortheCriticalFriendsprogramme.

While Critical Friends probably is especiallyuseful for librarians with few teaching col-leagues,weassumethatthismightalsobeahindrancewheninvitedtoreceivefeed-backontheirteaching,astheyhavefeweroppor-tunitiesfordiscussionsonthesetopics.WhenplanningtouseCriticalFriendsasamodelforprofessionaldevelopment,wewouldsuggestfirstcreatingopportunitiesfordiscussionsonteachingandgiveathoughttoteambuilding.
