Dance Collections '98 QUT Theatre, QUT Gardens Point campus
June10-13
Introduction
Welcome to Dance Collections '98. Tonight you will see eight varied works, seven of which have been created especially for this season. Master of Fine Arts student, Janette Mulligan, has been working with a group of students on the remounting of White Swan solo from Swan Lake. This production is intended as a showcase for the semester's work and I am sure you will agree it has been a productive and fruitful start to the year.
QUT will host the Bloch Tertiary Dance Festival this year which is being kindly sponsored by the dancewear manufacturer Bloch. The festival is a biennial event which brings together final-year students from institutions all over Australia and from schools in New Zealand, South Africa and Hong Kong. As part of the festival we will welcome back Catherine Quinn and Deb Saxon who will perform as part of a project called Island to Island which showcases the best of British dance.
Our graduates continue to succeed in the profession. Notably Tracey Carrodus has received critical acclaim for her portrayal in the Sydney Dance Company's production of Salome.
Tonight you will see the next generation of Australian dancers. Staff appreciate the hard work that all students have done throughout the semester and hope that performers and audience alike will enjoy the evening.

'Mapping', through movement, the Chinese characters of each dancer's name was the creative starting point of this work in which we explore aspects of identity of these contemporary Asian dancers. The dancers' and my own memories are reflected in the fragments of Taiwanese, Chinese and Vietnamese folk forms reworked in a contemporary context. I would like to thank the dancers for their contribution in what was a most enjoyable process .

The presentation of White Swan Solo demonstrates the final phase in the process of the oral tradition of passing down major roles in ballet. Within the walls of the Maryinsky Theatre great ballerinas have passed down their roles in the Russian Class ballets to the next generation of ballerinas.
Natalia Makarova, the Russian ballerina, gave invaluable knowledge and insight ofher Russian training as she produced and coached the roles of the ballerina in her production of Swan Lake.

I have scars on my hands from touching certain people. Certain heads, certain colors and textures of human hair leave permanent marks on me. Other things too. Charlotte once ran away from me, outside the studio, and I grabbed her dress to stop her, to keep her near me. A yellow cotton dress I loved because it was too long for her. I still have a lemon-yellow mark on the palm of my right hand.
