Samuel Langhorne Clemens, one of America's most widely known
humorists and literary artists, was born in this two-room
cabin on November 30, 1835. Clemens lived in the Florida
area until November 1839 when his family moved to Hannibal,
Missouri.
Clemens' life in the river town of Hannibal provided him with
colorful settings and characters for his world-famous novels:
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Life on
the Mississippi.
While working as a reporter for the Virginia City Territorial
Entsrprise. Samuel Clemens is presumed to have first used the
pen name of "Mark Twain", a river term meaning two fathoms
(12 feet).
