This course will take a turn from the traditional, systems based, model of teaching and will instead begin with the most commonly utilized protocol in emergency medicine, the eFAST exam, and build on it to gain a further and more comprehensive understanding of the RUSH and BLUE protocols. This course will also take an in-depth look at procedural ultrasound to gain understanding of the proven techniques to get the needle where it needs to go as safely as possible. This course is a collaborative effort by the Association of Physicians in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and the Society of Point-of-Care Ultrasound with the goal of providing exceptional didactic lectures with scanning labs mentored by physician assistants that are leaders in the field of point-of-care ultrasound.
Objectives: - Understanding Why Point-of Care Ultrasound is Becoming the “New Normal”
In Modern Medicine and Why It Offers a Significant Advancement in the Ability to Diagnose and Assess Patients at the Bedside.
- Review the Basic Principles of Sound Waves, i.e. What They Are, How They Are Created, how they Interact with Tissues - All to Render and Easily to Interpret an Image.
- Explore the Basic Functions (Depth, Gain, “other buttons”) of the
Ultrasound Machine in Order to Optimize Diagnostic Images As Well As the Basic
