HOW TO RECORD OBSERVATIONS IN THIS JOURNAL
Each journal should be used to record observations for one breeding incidence.
Record details of the location. Give latitude and longitude if you know them. Use the spaceprovided to make a sketch of the site.
Describe the land use in the area surrounding the breeding area. Use categories like
“urban”, “parkland”, “bushland” and add any explanatory qualifiers such as “dense”,
“scattered”, etc.
Describe the site. This is the place to include details about ground cover, trees, shrubs,
structures.
There is no set observation period or minimum number of observations.
For each observation, record the date, time or time range and the weather.
Which part of the breeding cycle was the observation made in? Tick the appropriate box.
What behaviors were observed? Mark as many boxes as you need, and add additional
categories if necessary. Give more details of the observations in the “Observation Notes”
section.
If your notes are more extensive, write them out on loose sheets and tuck them into the
book. Make sure any additional notes have the date and site at the top of each page.
Remember that this journal is a guide, not a straightjacket.. As long as I can follow them, I
am interested in an observations you would like to contribute.
