Quilted Double Zip ToteExposed zippers are great in clothing and

accessories. This quilted tote has plenty of 

pockets inside and out.

Open the zipper and turn the fabric with rightsides together. Place the zipper so that it isabout ½’from the top. Sew the sides together and turnthrough the open zipper and press. Centerthe completed pocket on the opposite side of the purse lining about 2 or 3 inched from thetop. Stitch the pocket in place. Fold the purselining with right sides together and sew theside seams. Fold the bottom corners to box

the purse bottom and stitch about a 3” width.Set lining aside.

2. PipingUse a piping foot or a zipper foot, fold the biasstrip around the piping cord. Stitch close tothe piping. Trim seam allowances to ½”.

3. PurseMark a line with marking pen at a 45 degreeangle and make parallel lines 2” away. Do thisover all the bag fabric Place the batting on thewrong side of the bag fabric.. Using Dual DutyXP multi-color thread, stitch the batting to the

fabric on marking. After you have stitched,mark a line in the opposite direction makingdiamond shapes and stitch.

4. Front Pieced PocketUsing a ¼” seam allowance, sew togethersquare making a block pattern. Embellish asdesired with decorative stitch using multi-color thread. Right sides together, sew piecedpocket front to 6 ½” x 11 ½” lining fabric onthree sides, leaving one narrow end open. Turn and press. Sew this on the front of thepurse for an outside pocket.

5. Zipper pocketsMark pocket placement. Using a marking pen,mark a rectangle ½” wide by 7” long.Place the 11 x 10” pocket lining over thepocket marking, right sides together. Mark pocket on the lining 1 “ from top edge. Stitcharound marking. Make a cut through thecenter stopping ½’ from the end. Cut to thecorners being careful not to cut the stitching. Turn lining fabric to the wrong side. Press the

We used corduroy solids for the fashion fabricand Dapples for the lining from FreeSpirit fabrics.

Use ½” seam allowance

Steps:

1. Pockets for lining: Fold the 15” x 9” in half right sides together. Sew lengthwise, leavingthe ends open. Turn the pocket to the rightside forming a tube shape. Press. Place on theright side 2” from the top of the lining. Thiswill be attached in the side seams. Sew acrossthe bottom of tube. Divide into pockets bysewing from top fold to bottom throughlining fabric. For the other side lining pocket,on the 8” x 13” pocket piece, turn under ½” oneach 8” end. Press. Using a zipper foot placethe folded on the zipper tape and edge stitchin place. Place the other fold on the other sideof the zipper tape and edge stitch in placeforming a tube shape with a zipper attached.

Fashion fabric – 1 yd

Fashion fabric in contrastingcolor-fat quarter or scraps forsquares

Batting – 1 yd

Lining fabric- 1 yd

Coats Fashion zippers, 7” 3zippers

Coats Separating Zipper 16” , 1zipper

Dual Duty XP general purposethread to match fabric

Dual Duty XP general purposethread in a multicolor (9363Spring Greens used here)

Cording for piping- 2 ¼ yards of ¼” (or may use purchased piping)

opening. Place a 7” zipper in the center of theopening and edge stitch around the opening.Fold the lining fabric in half again and stitchalong the bottom. The top and side seamsshould be sewn in the side seam of the purseand in the top seam. Repeat for other zipper.

6. PipingPlace piping in the side seam and with rightsides together. Sew the sides of the purse.Fold the bottom and stitch the corner 3” wide.Place the lining inside the purse.Baste the top together.

7. Top ZipperUsing the separating zipper, place the endof the zipper about ¾” from the side seam.Drop the zipper tape a little lower than thetop edge and stitch on the edge of the zippertape. Do not sew close to the zipper teeth.Sew the other side. If the zipper is to long foldthe end up. The bias trim will cover it.

8. HandlesPlace the batting in the middle of the fabric.Sew piping along both sides of the handles.With right sides together sew the handlepieces together and turn. Place the handle oneach side of the purse at the side seams andsew in place.

9. Finishing top of BagFold the bias trim in half, wrong sidestogether and press. Join the ends and makesure they fit the purse. Sew this to the outside of the purse. Fold to the inside and handstitch in place or can sew by machine.
