AGROECOSYSTEM
In our agroecosystem field trip last February ! "#$% in &ioSci area! 'e 'ere introduced
to plots containing (arious organisms and 'ere instructed to do identification and conduct an
in(estigation on t)e said plots and organisms* +iseases! insects! 'eeds! and crops,
T)e first site 'as near t)e green)ouses be)ind t)e &ioSci
building! in front of Main-ib, Crops t)at are gro'n in t)e site
'ere tobacco . Nicotinia tabacum)! tomato .Solanum

corn leaf spot! tomato 'ilt and can1er! Rottboelia
cochinchinensis, Imperita Cylindrica, Cynodon dactylon,
Ipomea triloba! etc, 2o'e(er! t)ere 'ere also natural enemies
of insects present on t)e field! suc) are arac)nids, Also!
obser(ed near t)e scene 'ere crop protection management
and3or fertili4ing met)ods li1e placement of rice stra's

For t)e class6s second site! 'e 'ere guided to a green)ouse full of potted rice plants,
T)ese are 1no'n to be test sub7ects for inoculation of (arious diseases for furt)er e8amination
and study for t)e students and researc)ers ali1e, Suc) diseases are0 Xanthomonas oryzae pv
oryzae, !yricularia oryzae, Sclerophthora macrospora, and Rhizoctonia solani T)oug) fe'!
t)ere 'ere also 'eeds gro'ing from t)e same pots as t)e crops .Cyperus iria and Cyperus
rotundus/ and insect infestation e(idences seen on t)e plants0 c)e'ed up parts of t)e plants6
lea(es,
T)e class6s ne8t tour 'as in t)e apiary! located near t)e green)ouses, An artificial )abitat
for bees or a temporary colony instituted intended to produce and )ar(est )oney for economical
purposes, T)ere 'ere " species of stingless bees being ta1en care of, Seen around t)e area 'ere
flo'ers of different 1inds! a fountain! ac1no'ledged

For t)e last leg of t)e tour! 'e 'ere broug)t to t)e ot)er side of t)ecompound to be presented 'it) Cocos nuci#era, "an$i#era indica! and %eucaena
leucocephala sprouts! and &i$na radiata, T)e smallest of t)e coconut seedlings
and %eucaena leucocephala 'ere potted and yet to be transplanted to t)e ground,
T)e mung beans! )o'e(er! are all potted because of t)eir natural gro't) si4e,
After careful e8amining t)ese plants! one may be able to see t)at t)e coconut
sprouts are actually eit)er inoculated or infested 'it) a disease of leaf blig)t,

t)e follo'ing inputs are incorporated in t)e field0 monoculture! planting of a resistant (ariety!
and application t)at 1ill all art)ropods= Monoculture! t)e practice of planting only one species or
(ariety of crop in a field! could pose a real problem in t)e long term because after some time!
pests 'ould be attracted to t)ese crops and e(en after a period of pest controlling! )o'e(er
concentrated! t)ese pests 'ould de(elop resistance and ')en gi(en t)e opportunity to act! t)ey
could destroy t)e entire population of crops in s'ift stri1e,
