This past week the manager,Janice Jacobson, Kings VarietyStore in Gooding handed outthreeIdahoCommunityFoun-dationgrantawardstolocalnon-profitorganizations. The Wendell Senior Centerreceived$2000tohelpprovidecomfortableseatingintheirnewbuildingwhichrecentlyopenedacross from the Wendell CityHall. TheGoodingCommunityChoraleandOrchestrawillbeupgradingtheirsound/stageequipmentwitha$1000grant.Thiswillhelpthemmaintainthehighqualitymusicexperiencethisperformingartsor-ganizationisknownfor.(bottomphoto:RickStrickland) These awards are a good reminder ofwhattheChristmasseasonisallabout...givingtothosewhoneedthemost.

Gooding County ICF Grants

Earlierthisyear,ashel-terbeltprojectwasstartedtohelpprotecttheCamasMedicalServicesbuildingand the emergency heli-padfromwindblowndustandsnow.Thisprojectwasstarted when Wes Fieldsexpressedconcernsandof-feredtodonatetrees. OnMondayofthisweek,IdahoPowerrepresentitive,DanOlmstead,bravedthewinter storm to present a$2000check to theCam-as Conservation District(CCD).Thisputsthefund-ingfortheshelterbeltproj-ectat87%withonly$800lefttoraise. ThemainwaterlineshavebeeninstalledtothelocationandnextspringtheCityofFairfieldwillworkonput-tinginthealteriallinestowaterahalfdozenrowsoftrees which will includedogwood,juniper,etc. DanOlmsteadsaidthiswas an unusual projectfor Idaho Power to fund.Most grant requests are

“TheCourierNews”withmywifeandI…butknowingTeeforquitesometime,wewereinterestedinhis“CupofTEE”.Afterreadingthenewswewouldleavethepaperonthetablesofourdonut/coffeeshopforcustomerstoread.The“earlyshift”ofretiredmenwouldstrikeupaconver-sationbasedonsomethingtheyhadread.Becauseofthetimelapse(andmymemory)Icannotrememberspecifics,butIthinktheyenjoyedmorereadingabout“lifeintheprairie”,especiallythewagontrailre-enactment.IknowmyGreat-grandparentshelpedhanddigawellfortheSantéFetrailbackinBaldwinCity,Kansas,soitbroughtbackmemoriesofthecommunityprovidingabreakfasttosendthetravelersontheirway.Growingupina“rural”Missouricommunity,Imissthe“local”takeonnewsandpreferrednewsofthecommunityanditsresidences…notfillerarticles.Thereisenough(bad)goingoninthisworld,thatachancetoreflectonamemorystirredbyoneofhisarticleswasalwaysapleasantjourney.(WhenIaskedmywife“Whateverhappenedtothosearticles?”shesaidtheywalkedoutthedoorwithoneofourmanycustomerstobesharedwithothers.)
