”Integration of Statistics and Geospatial data”
• Target at many levels
• Global: UN Global Geospatial Information Management (UN GGIM),
UN Expert Group on Integration of Statistics and Geospatial
Information, UNECE/Modernstats
• European: Eurostat, UN GGIM Europe, Eurogeographics,
European Forum for Geography and Statistics (EFGS)
• Nordic: Nordic Forum for Geography and Statistics (NFGS)

From politics to action
• A well-organised and managed production environment takes
care of coherency and interoperability
• The most efficient way is to ensure integration on an
organisational and national level…
• …but the tools and standards should be defined on a higher level
• Organisational best practices and national level experiences of
cooperation are the best input for defining higher-level targets

Strategic Goals
• Centralised operating model for production of geospatial information
• Geospatial information is defined in the logical geospatial data warehouse
• Geospatial information is utilised uniformly
• Geospatial information is provided according to user needs
• Cooperation with other geospatial information producers
• e.g. National land survey of Finland

The Geospatial Reference Architecture –
Geospatially related Roles
1 Steering• Owner of the Geospatial Issues
2 Development, Management, Maintenance• Owner of the Geospatial Reference Architecture
• Responsible for
• Geospatial Operating Architecture
• Geospatial Data Architecture
• Geospatial related System and Technology Architecture
• Geospatial Methods
• Co-operation in the Geospatial field
• (IT architect)
• Contact point (statistical production, customers)
• Maintenance of the shared geospatial data warehouse
• Maintenance of shared geospatial services

Implementation of the Geospatial Reference Architecture – 2019
• Implementation of the Geospatial Reference Architecture (starting in March 2019)
• The Geospatial Management Group was established: 4 geospatial experts
• Owner unit decided (Standards and Methods Unit)
• Steering organised: 3 directors (Standards and Methods Unit, Population and
Social Statistics Unit and ICT Management Unit)
• Geospatial Contact Point: help and support center
• Experiences so far:
• First impressions: make actions consistent, objectives relating to interoperable data
and services closer to realisation
• Good to have steering capable to make (all) decisions related to geospatial actions!
• Clear responsibilities - releases statistical units working with issues they are not
usually familiar with

Ability to cooperate in a new way
New kind of cooperation between Statistics Finland and the National Land Survey of
Finland (NMA)
• Interoperability as a target
• Concepts, processes, data and services
• Architecture as a tool
• A shared vision
• Defined roles
• Shared descriptions
• A shared roadmap of development
