Introducing the Counting to 100th Day Gumball Banner and Magnets KitOnthefirstdayofschool,gatherstudentswheretheycanseetheBanner.TellthemthatyouwillbechoosingastudenteachdaytoberesponsibleforselectingtheappropriatenumberedGumball Magnettoplaceinthechuteonthegumballmachine.Directstudents’attentiontotheGumball Magnetsatthetopofthegumballmachine,chooseastudenttofindtheMagnet labeledwiththenumber1,andhavehimorherplaceitatthetopofthechute.Modelhowyouwouldlikestudentstotellthenumberofthedaybysaying,“Todayisdaynumber1.”Ifyouwanttointroduceordinalnumbers,youcanadd,“Itisthefirstdayofschool.”Indicatethateachdaytheclasswillcounttogetheruptothatday’snumberasthestudentpointstoeachGumball Magnetinthechute.Havestudentsbrainstormhowtheycanfindouthowmanydaysareleftuntil100thDay.IndicatethatwhenalloftheGumball Magnetshavebeenplacedinthechute,itwillbe100thDayandtimetocelebrate.

Daily Count and ColorCopyanddistributetheCounting to 100th Day Gumball Reproducible.Eachday,remindstudentstocolorinthe gumballthatcorrespondswiththeMagnetthathasbeenplacedinthechuteontheBanner.EncouragestudentswhoneedmoresupporttopointdirectlytothegumballontheirreproducibleasthestudentpointstotheMagnetontheBanner.Askstudentstopointtoeachgumballontheirreproducibleastheclasscountstogethereachday.Havestudentsstorethereproducibleinafolderforeasyaccess.

Clap and Tap for Fives and TensAsmoreMagnetsareplacedinthechute,havestudentspracticecountingthenumberofdaysthathavepassedby5sand10s.Havestudentslookforacolorpatternalongthegumballchutetoidentifythatallfivesaregreenandalltensarered.WhencountingtheMagnetstogether,directstudents

toclapeachtimetheysayafactorof5,andtaptheirkneeswhentheysayafactorof10.

Hundreds ChartCopyanddistributetheHundreds Chart Reproducible.Eachtime a Magnet ismovedtothechute,directstudentstofindtheday’snumber(5,10,15,andsoforth)onthereproducible.Instructstudentstocolortheboxesforfactorsof5inonecolorandforfactorsof10inanothercolor.Encouragestudentswhoneedmoresupporttopointtothenumbersonthereproducibleuntiltheyreachtheday’snumber.

AsmoreMagnetsareplacedonthechute,pose100-gridriddlesforstudentstosolve.Forexample,tellthestudents: • I am two jumps down and three jumps to the left from today’s number, what number am I? (Ifyoustartedwith5, theirnumbershouldbe22.) • I am number 27. If I moved to the number that is 10 more, where would I be? • I am number 14. If I moved to the number that is 10 less, where would I be?Challengestudentstomakeuptheirownriddlesfortheclasstosolve.

100th Day Gumball CelebrationCelebrate100thDayandthecompletionoftheBannerwithafungumballcelebration.Forinstance: • Purchase100gumballsandusethemasprizesforsolving mathproblemsusingthenumber100.Allowstudents somegum-chewingtimetoenjoytheirprizes. • Generatealistof100newgumballflavorsandtheir colors.Encouragestudentstoaddsomesillyoneslike asparagus(green),dogbone(tan),orworm(brown.) • HavestudentswritestorieswiththetitleofWhat I Would Do with 100 Gumballs,andthenencouragethemtoshare thestorieswiththeclass.
