HISTORY Represents Shipbrokers, Ship Owners, Managers and
Agents Founded in 1911,in London by Members of the Baltic Exchange
due to the increasing low standards amongst shipbrokers at the
time. The Institute was awarded a Royal Charter in 1920 by King
George V. And became The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers The
Charter was amended in 1984 to open the membership to companies and
non-British subjects. As a result, the Institute is now truly
international and provides a great deal of opportunity for
networking.

SA Branch History A South African Shipbrokers Association was
formed in 1965, but due to the situation in South Africa at the
time, it was not recognised by the ICS. In those years South Africa
was isolated, and there was no official communication between ICS
and the Head office in London. It was only in 1994, when South
Africa held its first democratic election that the current South
Africa Branch of ICS was formed ( ICSSA). In the first year 34
students sat the ICS tutorship exams

Understanding Shipping Certificate The course is based on
nine(9) correspondence/distance learning lessons with a personal
tutor assigned to each student After each lessons the student is
required to submit a test paper comprising of a number of multiple
choice question as well as a short written paper of about 150
words. At the end of the course students are invited to attend a
brief oral and written interview by senior member in the Shipping
Industry SHIPS AND TRADES Reasons for Sea Transport, Shipping and
trades, Types of ships, Maritime Geography, Communication. THE
BUSINESS AND THE PLAYERS The Company, Principals, intermediaries,
The Practitioners their role, their responsibilities and their
income, Organisations. BILLS OF LADING The bill of ladings three
functions, Release and delivery of cargo. Different types of B/L.
PORT AGENCY Definition of an agents authority, Port Services and
the providers, cargo working, husbandry, after departure, local
requirements. BULK CARRIER & TANKER DOCUMENTS Charter parties,
other documents, Basic laytime concepts. LINER AGENCY DOCUMENTATION
The agency agreement, Space allocation, sales & marketing,
dealing with cargo bookings, special cargo, documentation and
consortia. CHARTERING The chartering markets, Types of charter, how
a deal is made, authority and responsibility, after the fixture.

and facilities of ports with particular reference to South Africa,
The principal exports and imports of the Southern African region.
SHIP MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS Integral department or independent
managers. Organisation structure. Specialist crew controlling.

TUTORSHIP Foundation Diploma (FD) The ICS Foundation Diploma
comprises of two subjects: Introduction to Shipping, which is
compulsory plus a Group 2 subject from the ICS PQE syllabus.
Advanced Diploma (AD) The ICS Advanced Diploma is a combination of
Shipping Business plus a Group 2 subject from the ICS PQE syllabus.
Professional Qualifying Exams (PQE) Seven subjects must be
successfully completed within 5 years to be eligible for
application for membership of the Institute of Chartered
Shipbrokers.

SUPPORT, BURSARIES AND AWARENESS

Schools The serves as a supports system for most of the schools
who do Maritime Economics in South Africa. The ICS will also assist
the schools with placement for work experience and will direct
companies looking to employ young people to the various schools
Along with Maritime Economics as a subject, High School learners
are given the opportunity to do the Understanding Shipping Course
in Grade 12. The ICS Gives out Understanding Shipping Bursaries to
3 schools every year BURSARIES New Forest High School Woodlands,
Durban 7 Bursaries + 12 paying Sithengile Clermont, Durban 12
Bursaries (Jo Tankers) Lawhill,Simons Town Cape Town 5 Bursaries
Total: 36 learners on the US Course in 2013 Bursaries were
allocated to schools again this year.

Bespoke Courses These are specially tailored courses designed
specifically to meet a companys education and training needs. The
ICS is commissioned by the company to develop a specific course.
The workbooks and presentations cover Container Exports, Dry Cargo
Chartering and Bills of Lading.

Objectives and Role of Trust To ensure that the quality of
Maritime education provided is of the highest standard possible. To
ensure that the Maritime education provided to the school(s) is in
line with what the industry needs. To establish a fund through
which grants, scholarships, fellowships and other forms of
financial assistance to the needy and deserving students can be
provided for the purpose of pursuing education advancement within
the maritime sector. (sesction 18.a SARS act) To promote Maritime
Education at Secondary Education level through Education, Training,
Mentorship Programs, Awareness Seminars and other related mediums.
To create a link with between the schools maritime program and the
maritime industry. To ensure the proper running of the schools
program. To contribute towards the promotion of maritime awareness
and careers within the previously disadvantaged communities in
Southern Africa. To contribute towards a safe and sustainable
utilisation of maritime resources in Southern Africa. To honour and
recognise the role of African communities in the global development
of the maritime industry. To ensure that funds donated to the
school's Maritime program via the schools trust are managed and
used accordingly. To give guidance and support to the schools
maritime program. To ensure that learner development is in
accordance to the needs of the industry. To monitor the progress
and development of the learners and teachers. To give insight and
advice on the running and management of the Maritime Economics
