Construction Impact on General Purpose Classroom Space
• Currently we have a baseline inventory of 192 General Purpose Classrooms with a total of 10,542 seats
• Generally we have been able to operate with a loss of 14 - 15 rooms each semester, or about 7-8% of our total inventory offline.
• Between Summer 2005 – Summer 2007 we will be entering a period of heavy construction impact where our General Purpose Classroom inventory will be consistently below that acceptable loss level.

• For each Room Size, as the percentage changes, so does the potential impact of construction.

• Over the past academic year, construction has had the greatest impact on the room size categories where we utilize the fewest seats each semester (40-49 & 50-99) and/or where we can best absorb the losses of classrooms because other options are available (30-39).

Looking forward, it appears that impending construction projects will impact the following room
size categories most severely:
•30-39 (current inventory 49 rooms)•40-49 (current inventory 47 rooms)•100-199 (current inventory 15 rooms)•200+ (current inventory 5 rooms)
We must also consider the additional impact of taking entire building(s) offline, which may displace an entire
department and its own rooms as well.
• Previous periods of construction indicate that we can probably handle the projected losses for the 30-39 & 40-49 ranges. However, it appears that impending construction projects may have the greatest impact on the Room Size categories that can least afford it.
• 100-199 (current inventory 15 rooms)• 200+ (current inventory 5 rooms)
Summer/Fall 2005:
– We will lose HM 100 & GR 001 at the same time. (this is 2 out of 3 400+ seat classrooms)
– At the same time we will also lose ¼ of our rooms in the 100-199 range, including 3 of the 4 biggest rooms in that category for the summer of 2005. (CO 201:198, MA 209:188, FG 109:183)
– Both MA 209 & FG 109 are tentatively scheduled to be back online for Fall 2005 – It is imperative that these 2 rooms be available as scheduled to help absorb the loss of the 200+ size rooms the same semester. It could be very bad if either or both rooms are not available for occupancy as scheduled.
Fall 2006 – Fall 2007:
– Newly renovated GR 001 should come back online, however at the same time we lose Venable (entire building) including 3 of its General Purpose classrooms that seat 100 or more.
– Although both HM 100 & GR 001 should be back online at this time, both will have significant reductions in the number of seats available.
– Beginning in Spring 2006 there will only be a single classroom on campus with more than 400 seats. Moving all of our 400+ classes to a single room (CA 111) could have significant impact.

Summary & Conclusions
• After this period of construction is over, our current General Purpose Classroom Inventory will drop
– From 192 to 183 Rooms– From 10,542 to 9,430 Seats
– Excluding Stone Center, Arts Common, Science Complex, Global Education Center
Permanent Reduction in General Purpose Classroom Space
• The current construction schedule indicates that the most difficult period will be the Summer of 2005 through the Summer of 2007.
• During this time, we will lose up to 29% of our rooms with 100 or more seats each semester.
• We will also suffer significant losses in the smaller size classroom categories, particularly the 30-39 & 40-49 ranges.
• It is absolutely critical that construction on Manning and Fetzer finish on time and that they become available, as scheduled, for the Fall of 2005. If either or both projects are not finished on time….
Critical Construction Periods
• It is important to note that it is not just the number of classrooms that are offline each semester, but which classrooms are offline and how we use those type of rooms that determines the potential impact of construction.
• This is why the impact of construction on our larger size room sizes can be more complex. Unfortunately, it appears that future construction will impact the 100+ size rooms, where we can least absorb or afford the loss, the most.
• We must also remember that during the summer, our larger classrooms are more frequently used by CTOPS, and other summer groups rather than for classes.
Construction Impact on Room Size
• For the 30-39 & 40-49 ranges: – Use Trailers as Teaching Spaces– Borrow Departmentally Delegated Spaces (Temporarily)– Don’t allow Departments to Block Space in these Rooms
(Temporarily)– Encourage On-line Classes
• For the 100+ Ranges:– Borrow Rooms from schools/colleges such as Pharmacy & Social
Work (Temporarily)– Use Manning Hall if it is vacated by SILS– Use Space in Union (Great Hall? Auditorium?)
