Harry Connick Jr. usually is in charge of every aspect ofhis recordings, but for his latest release, That Would Be Me,has chosen two “external” producers on this album – the ac-claimed Eg White (Sam Smith, Adele, Florence And The Ma-chine) and Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Pink).

“For the most part, nobody’s ever made musical decisionsfor me before,” said Connick. “This is brand new territory.I’m used to jumping in head-first, but all of a sudden I foundmyself not in full control of the wheel anymore.” Connicknotes that he picked up on both producers’ styles as theybegan working together. “Butch is more of a ‘let’s play thesong in the room’ kind of guy, so we invited a couple moremusicians in; with Eg, it was a completely different experi-ence – it was just the two of us in a room writing, starting withan idea, a groove or a chord or melody line.”

The result is fantastic, including his catchy first single, “(IDo) Like We Do.”

I really liked “(I Like It When You) Smile” which had aultra-cool jazzy scat, rap.

Connick began playing the keyboards at the age of three, played publicly for the first time at five and had a jazz bandby 10. In fact, at age nine, he performed the Piano ConcertoNo. 3 Opus of Beethoven.

Connick first started branching out musically in 1994 withShe, an album fueled by New Orleans funk.

He’s included some of that flair on That Would Be Me withthe funky “Where Prisoners Drown.”

Another favorite is the stripped back, piano heavy “Song-writer.” This is one of Harry’s best.

Blues duo take on music of Lead BellyI’ve been a long time fan of Eric Bibb. And of course, I’ve

always found Lead Belly (1888-1949) and his music interesting, especially since he made something out of himself, after servingtime for killing one of his relatives.

His real name was Huddie William Ledbetter, and it’s be-lieved he picked up “Lead Belly,”  while in prison. Some claimhis fellow inmates called him "Lead Belly" as a play on his fam-ily name and his physical toughness.

However, I wasn’t familiar with Jean-Jacques Milteau — heis a French blues harmonica player, singer, and songwriter.

Together, Bibb and Milteau have created a fantastic, acousticblues tribute — Lead Belly’s Gold.

“What I hear now, when I listen to Lead Belly’s recordingsand youtube clips, and what I must have sensed when I was aboy, is the man’s personal power and independence. His soundmade it clear that he was his own man,” Eric said. “The fatalismand resignation that I heard later in the voices of many of mypre-war blues heroes was missing in Lead Belly. He was wayahead of his time. The path he cut through a world that conspiredto rob him of his humanity, dignity and manhood was a personaltriumph that will inspire for generations to come.”
