ADVANCING AWARENESS OF HOW ARCHITECTURE ENRICHES LIFE
There is no doubt that 2020 was a year fraught with pandemic-related challenges. But it also had silver linings for many, including the Michigan Architectural Foundation.
Although many of our annual fundraising events got canceled, MAF thrived financially. In 2020, the Foundation received a record $197,000 in donations, which was designated in full for MAF’s endowment. MAF also awarded more that $94,000 for scholarships, and programs and initiatives that make the lives of Michigan residents better through architecture.
While traditional methods of carrying out programs and getting things done were also disrupted, MAF board members and our grantees quickly adapted to virtual formats. With many architecture student internships canceled over the summer, MAF, AIA Michigan, and leaders of Michigan’s college and university architecture programs collaborated to develop the Internship Grants Bridge Program. Eight architecture students participated

in virtual internships that helped preserve educational, work experience, and career-boosting opportunities. MAF provided program funding.
Many of our 2020 Architecture Awareness Grant recipients also adapted their programs to a virtual format, bringing their programs safely to participants, and expanding their program reach. This includes the National Association of Minority Architects Detroit (NOMA Detroit’s) popular Project Pipeline camps, a multi-year MAF program grantee. MAF is excited to announce that the Architecture Maker Kits for children, funded by MAF’s Dumke Fund, will be available in libraries throughout Michigan once it is safe to reconvene. The fund’s namesake, retired AIA Michigan Executive Director Rae Dumke, Hon. AIA, received MAF’s 2020 Leadership Award, in recognition of her unprecedented efforts in developing architecture-based educational programs for children.
Despite uncertainty and unfortunately, tragedy, 2020 also was a year marked by resiliency, hope, generosity, and resourcefulness. It was a year we will never forget, and one made memorable in part by those dedicated to supporting one another, and those who supported MAF’s mission to advance awareness of how architecture enriches life.

Throughout 2020, the pandemic caused major shifts to new ways of getting things done – including the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Detroit’s popular Project Pipeline Camps, which were held in a virtual format last summer. A total of 30 students, ages 12 to 18, from throughout Michigan and outside of the state, participated. NOMA Detroit purchased tablets and Wi-fi hotspots for students who needed them, so that lack of access to technology would not be a barrier for attendance.
FUTURE ARCHITECTS GO TO (VIRTUAL) CAMP!
NOMA DETROIT’S 2020 PROJECT PIPELINE ARCHITECTURE CAMP
NOMA created Project Pipeline to help increase the number of minority and under-represented high school students exposed to careers in architecture. Bryan Cook, AIA, NOMA Detroit President-elect and MAF board member, brought the Project Pipeline camps to Michigan in 2013. The program has received financial support from MAF’s Architecture Awareness Grants since its inception.
“It’s very rewarding to get kids excited about architecture, and to know you’ve possibly played a role in setting them on the path to future career success.” - Bryan Cook, AIA, NOMA Detroit.

Advancing Awareness of How Architecture Enriches Life
In 2020, MAF’s K12 committee launched two digital tools to connect parents, educators, and children with MAF’s free educational resources, Architecture: it’s Elementary! and ArchiTreks. • MAF’s K12 YouTube channel,
Architecture for Youth, hosts MAF’s ‘Architecture: it’s Elementary! and ‘ArchiTreks’ program videos.
• MAF’s K12 Instagram account, Architecture for Youth, shares news and highlights from MAF’s educational programming and other educational, architecture-related programming.
MAF’s K12 committee also updated its Architecture: it’s Elementary! K5 curriculum guide in 2020.

ONE OF A KIND LEADER: RAE DUMKE, HON. AIA, RECEIVES 2020 MAF LEADERSHIP AWARD
No one has made more of a lasting impact on children’s architectural education in Michigan than Rae Dumke. Through the Rae Dumke Development Fund, she co-curated the Build Imagination Book Collection for children, and 100 Essential Architecture Books for adults and teens. Post-pandemic, the Dumke Fund will introduce the Architectural Maker Kits program, featuring tools for children to engage in hands-on learning of architectural concepts, and available in libraries throughout Michigan. Rae’s vision, leadership, and execution of these programs is a model for others who want to educate and inspire creativity in children, and advance awareness of how architecture enriches life for everyone.

MAF GRANTS $30,000 FOR BIDDLE HOUSE RESTORATION
In 1957, the Michigan Architectural Foundation was formed specifically to raise funds to restore the oldest house on Mackinac Island, the Biddle House.
In 2020, MAF granted $30,000 for the most recent Biddle House restoration project, which is being overseen by Mackinac Historic State Parks. The goal of the project is to bring the home back to its 1830 form and prepare for its new role as a Native American Museum, celebrating the continuing story of the Anishnaabek people of the region. The 2020 grant, MAF’s largest single grant ever given, will ensure that the impact architecture has had on our state’s history and culture will continue to be communicated through this structure and its story.

STARKWEATHER MEMORIAL CHAPEL RECEIVES 2020 EVANS GRAHAM PRESERVATION AWARD
Starkweather Memorial Chapel, located at Ypsilanti’s historic Highland Cemetery, is the 2020 recipient of MAF’s Evans Graham Preservation Award. The $10,000 grant is supporting the restoration and adaptive reuse of the 1888 funeral chapel for use as a venue for lectures, weddings, receptions, and private and community events.
The sandstone, copper, and brick Richardsonian Romanesque-style chapel, designed by renowned architects Mason & Rice, was built as a memorial to John Starkweather from his wife Mary Ann, both prominent members of the Ypsilanti community. The building’s unique stained-glass windows were designed by Tiffany of New York.
