Technology as anInstructional Tool
Integrating TechnologyTeaching students the skills they need
For the 21st century
By: D. Kelley DeBoer
GRPS Shared Time Teacher
Technology has grown and become an everyday part of our lives. Science and Technology are now interdependent and you simply cannot have one without the other.
As educators it is our challenge to prepare our students for the work world of the future. To this end technology can no longer be seen as a separate class, but instead as an extension of classroom learning adding additional resources and tools.
In this presentation you will see technology projects that are rooted in instructional standards and benchmarks. Our goal is to increase student achievement and to engage students in the learning process so they may become life long learners.
How do we Access Technology? In a Lab?
With Laptops?
In a one computer room?
How do we afford it all??????
The following ideas use free downloadable software, and everyday items to enhance your education program.
Laptops on a cart can travel
Large Computer Labs
Allow whole class instruction and ability to differentiate instruction!
Work stations
In classrooms allow access for a few students at a time.
How do we Use What we Have?
• The computer can be more than the end product of instruction where students publish using word processing.
• It can be more than a research tool.
• We can use computers to design and apply skills.
• Move past the keyboard and develop projects from computer design.
Collaboration
• Working together in groups to create a wiki site on a topic area of interest
• http://saptreasureisland.pbworks.com/FrontPage St. Anthony’s middle school students create a wiki site on treasure island. 2nd grades collaborated on a virtual flat stanley Project http://sapflatstanley.pbworks.com/
Publishing
• Blogs- writing and response
• Brochures, cards, letters, envelopes, signs, invitations, banners. Presentations,, all possible using free online browser based tools.
Many programs offer the same skill practice.
Tux Paint is free- Can use instead of Kid Pix
Publish
Go beyond the poster and create models.
Shoe Box Verses and Map Making
Create a poem and bring it to life. Design a map on screen create it.

Computer Assisted DesignC.A.D.
• Computers are used to design homes, construct bridges, skyscrapers and so much more.
• Using CAD students apply their Math Skills in an authentic manner.
• Smart Draw allows students to create interior and exterior designs.
• 3D design Pro allows students to create their dream homes and view them from all sides.
• Animator allows students to create 3-D castles and churches using the same design tools that are used in the marketplace today.
• West Point Bridge Design Software- creates bridges using geometric principals.

Beginning Programming• Learning simple program scripting brings ideas to life!
• Spelling really counts in programming and accuracy became the important factor for success.
• Creating Mathematical Tessellations, shows a visual applying concepts
• Students created their own websites. Several published them to the web, and the 8th graders at SSPP designed the Parish Website. HTML=logic, planning and correct spelling.
• Robotics- plan and create movement through commands.
Drawing with Animation
Squeak• Children draw objects, then
script them to follow actions.• They create Electronic toys
known as ETOYS/• “Etoys are computer environments that
help people learn ideas by building and playing around with them. They help an "omniuser"—usually a child—create a satisfying and enjoyable computer model of the idea and give hints for how the idea can be expanded. “ squeakland.org
Alice
• The focus of the Alice project is now to provide the best possible first exposure to programming for students. Choose models and then script their actions.

Robotics• In the early years Roamer provides a
concrete way to explore all the key objectives. Thus allowing pupils to form a solid foundation of mathematical understanding upon which to build in later years.
• The roamer operates in a similar way to the turtle on First Logo. To get the children used to programming a roamer it is a good idea to get them to program a child first. This can be done simply by saying FORWARD 10 where 10 is 10 steps, etc.
• The important aspect when programming children is to ensure that a turn is one instruction and movement after the turn is either forward or backwards. I.e. to move 10 steps to the left the child needs to turn left 90 and then go forward 10 (NOT left 10). This activity is probably best done after a story or before lining up as a 'fun activity'.

Web Research
• Web Quests on classroom areas of study.
• How to copy and take notes from the internet, siting the source.
• How to verify sources.
• How to credit websites in reports.

An Incline Plane
After the Web Quest, and designing contraptions on the computer the students built their own scale model contraptions at St. Mark.

• Flow charts for html
• Storyboards for story creation
• Templates for Venn Diagrams, family trees, KWL, and the scientific process.

Digital Photography
• Blocking the shots• Using conversion programs to reduce
resolution• Using Edit tools in Word and in HP
software to crop and resize photo’s• Importing photo’s into drawing programs• Adding special Effects• Upload to snapfish.com to have a hard
cover book made.
Students learned how to edit, crop and use special effects with digital photograph.
