Making a Mural Happen at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science: It’s All Greek (and Roman) to Artist Jonathan Saiz
The fateful day that spelled the end of Pompeii when it
was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius is not the only day for which the classical city is remembered at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The ancient city, located in the Italian region known as Campania (near modern-day Naples) had a bustling sea port, bringing culture in abundance from exotic lands.
Art thrived here. Craftsmen and women produced brilliant frescoes, pottery, and sculpture. Performing arts could be found daily, with singers, actors, and orators filling the city forum. DMNS sets the stage for the usual daily happenings of A Day in Pompeii, complete with historic enactors costumed in clothing similar to what a typical citizen might have worn. Museum visitors got to witness a special treat as artist Jonathan Saiz spent two weeks painting a mural in the style of classic Rome.
“When I got the commission for the museum I was living in Mykonos, Greece for about eight months doing some large paintings for a gallery there,” said Saiz. “There’s an island –the island of Delos—nearby which had all sorts of amazing mosaics and paintings preserved as well. So I was able to study the relationship between Greek art and Roman art, which was very helpful.”
So how did he find this project in Denver?
“I didn’t find the opportunity—the opportunity sort of found me,” answers Saiz. He explained one of the museum’s directors, who has collected some of Saiz’s art, remembered him and contacted him when the thought of a live mural painting came into being.
“But there are other times, like I saw this girl with her mom really watching. The girl was about thirteen, loved to paint, herself, so I talked to them, brought her in. I let her actually work on it for about five minutes. So there’s been moments of real interaction like that.”
How did he prepare for this particular project?
“I bought every Pompeii book I could get my hands on, and then read them, and ripped them apart, and created this big folder of images of things that exist. But I think more what they wanted from me was to be inspired by the work and create something in the vein of it, but not to reproduce it. So it was also just being excited by the work [that] created the ideas that made the mural happen.”
Are there special painting techniques you’ve had to use?
“I don’t do fresco painting with wet plaster. It’s just too complicated and it’s not my

An array of different paints
“They contacted me and I submitted an idea. They liked that I was from Denver, and so the interactive part of my participation was that I could incorporate some of the Denver art community into the nature and science community, which doesn’t always overlap.”
Set up in the main foyer of the museum, Saiz (pronounced like the word ‘size’) worked meticulously day by day. Mesmerized children and adults could see his creation, entitled Phaeton, come to life right in front of their eyes. They could even smell the paint as it was being applied to the work surface. Considering the amount of work he had to complete, Saiz still made time to interact with curious on-lookers.
I asked him if he interacted with museum visitors very often.
“It depends on my mood, and sometimes when I need to focus I put these on,” he says, pointing to his headphones.

thing. But I have been mixing some dried pigments in with my oil paints to kind of adjust the texture and the color a little bit, to give it that plaster feel. But I have people ask me all time, ‘How are you keeping the plaster wet?’ and I tell them I’m definitely not doing a fresco. It’s oil—oil on wood.”
At one point while Saiz was painting, a woman hugged him and he unhooked the velvet rope and she stepped to the work space long enough for her friend to snap pictures of them together. I was surprised at his dedication to those interested in what he was doing, and probably standing there with a surprised look on my face.
“I’m his aunt,” she said, with a proud grin. “We’re so excited for him, and so excited he’s here.”
Saiz walked over, smiling.
“Her mom – my grandmother – used to paint and she died a few years ago and I got some of her paints. I was using a very special tube of her paint yesterday. I was thinking of you – that I wanted to show you…” he steps back towards his work area, and sorts through various tubes of paint.
“This is her old paint from like, the sixties,” he said, holding up a very bright green tube of paint, carefully rolled up to half way, from the bottom. “And it’s a beautiful, beautiful pigment. You can see the lines of it here,” he says, pointing to the stems and leaves of a plant he painted on the mural. “It just makes me feel good to have my grandma be a part of it.”
The mural by Jonathan Saiz will be auctioned at a silent auction as part of the
annual gala Museum After Dark on Friday, November 2, with proceeds to support education programs “for the next generation of scientists”. But if you haven’t seen Phaeton, it will be displayed along with the exhibit A Day in Pompeii until mid-January 2013.
Jonathan Saiz grew up in Denver, finding success in the city’s art community. As artist in residence at Redline Gallery, Denver, he was part of a show curated by Robischon Gallery. He’s had solo shows at Plus Gallery in Denver. He has also been represented by the Gildar Gallery, Denver. His work has appeared in Rome, Italy and in Mykonos, Greece. In December he plans to show with a gallery in London.
What does he plan to work on next?
“One reason I’m super-excited to be working with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science is my gallery work has sort of a crystal, mineral quality to it with different images in different forms. What I’d love to do is create something like what I’m creating—the mural—and then transform it into my more gallery work where I would start to fragment and deconstruct it…so I will keep using some of this imagery and this style of painting but blended towards my more experimental work.”

The Golden Triangle Museum District (GTMD), organizer of the Denver Plein Air Arts Festival, anounced that works have been selected for this year’s exhibit.
The Denver Plein Air Arts Festival is the largest urban plein air event in the nation, and includes the museum district, several city parks, the 16th Street Mall and other Denver locations.
This year, to help celebrate its Centennial, Denver Mountain Parks and the Lariat Loop Heritage Alliance partnered with the GTMD to arrange for artist access to various locations along the Lariat Loop National Scenic & Historic Byway.
Accepted works for the juried competition will be exhibited for the public at the Denver Central Library’s Vida Ellison Gallery from Nov. 13 through Dec. 31, 2012.
