Who we are
4
Structure
• European trade association for the promotion of cogeneration
• COGEN Europe was established in 1993 and is headquartered in Brussels
• The secretariat employs currently 6 people
We have a vision
• Through the promotion of cogeneration, to grow an industry which changes the way Europe provides heat and electricity for a sustainable future
Our approach is
• On behalf of our members we promote the wider use of cogeneration as part of Europe‘s sustainable energy strategy
• For this purpose we participate in the EU legislative process and meet with key actors in the European Commisison and European Parliament
• We work closely together with other stakeholders (see next slide) • We further our visibility through good working relations with Brussels-based and sector
media/press (EurActiv, European Voice, COSPP)

What we do
5
• Regular liaison and bilateral discussions with the relevant Commission Directorates-
General and staff, including DG Energy, DG Climate Action, DG Environment, DG
Research and DG Enterprise;
• A network of links with key Members of European Parliament (MEPs) and by
following the work of relevant EP Committees, such as ITRE and ENVI;
• Cooperation and close liaison with other key industry associations, renewable
associations and city representations;
• A set of active internal working groups which formulate and propose COGEN
Europe’s policy on key topics (e.g. on Energy Efficiency Directive, Electricity Network
Codes, Micro-CHP& Fuel Cell micro-CHP, bio-energy CHP and on Industrial
Emissions Directive)
• European co-funded projects (ene.field);
• Regular events such as our Annual Conference, EP dinner debates and others.

What is micro-CHP
• Micro-CHP…
…meet demand for heating, hot water in buildings while providing
electricity to replace of supplement the grid supply
…defined in the Energy Efficiency Directive as “cogeneration smaller
than 50 kWe”
…normally installed in residential and public buildings, as well as
small businesses
cogeneurope.eu 8
What is micro-CHP
• Diversity of CHP technologies…
…micro-CHP is largely based on Stirling engine, ORC, ICE or fuel cells
…the majority of micro-CHP, incl. fuel cells, run on natural gas
…the technology is adapted for biogas/biodiesel, hydrogen, waste
heat, biomass and solar thermal

Saving Primary Energy & Ensuring Security
of Supply
13
• Micro-CHPs can attain total
efficiencies above 90%
• Fuel cell micro-CHP can reach up
to 60% electrical efficiency
• Primary energy savings of around
25% compared to centralised
generation
• Recognised as a highly efficient
heating system via Ecodesign &
Energy Label

Empowering Energy Consumers
14
• ene.field unit installed in a 120 m2 German family home
• The fuel cell micro-CHP overs the base load energy
demand with constant 300W electrical power and 600W
thermal output used for warm water and heating
Advantages:
• Up to 40% primary energy savings
• Significant energy bill reductions
• Fits well with the existing gas and
electricity connection

Main factors affecting the market for
micro-CHP
19
Trends at national level are affected by several factors
• Determinants of growth:
Proven technology with high potential for energy savings, energy bill
reductions and important environmental benefits (lower CO2, NOx)
High appeal among consumers who learn about it
Strong and stable support schemes in some markets (e.g. Germany, Slovenia)
High and increasing on-site spark spreads in several markets
• Barriers to growth:
Lack of awareness among consumers, installers and utilities
Unstable and/or unfavourable regulatory framework (e.g. difficult grid
connection)
Still high cost Industry, EU and some national governments committed to
reduce cost

What is myCHP?
21
myCHP is a community of users,
installers, manufacturers who
enable and are committed to using
CHP technologies to meet the
energy needs of their businesses
and homes.

COGEN Europe Recognition Awards
& Gala Dinner 2016
24
• 22 March: COGEN Europe Recognition Awards & Gala Dinner.
• Deadline Recognition Awards Nominations: 12 February 2016.
• Each year COGEN Europe recognises those who have
contributed most to cogeneration through outstanding
performance and achievement. The COGEN Europe
Recognition Awards are an opportunity for individuals and
organisations to gain recognition for their achievements in
developing, applying and promoting cogeneration, and to
demonstrate the strengths and skills of the cogeneration
sector in the EU.
• Four categories of Award: Policy Development,
Technology and Innovation, Market Development
(organisation), Market Development (individual).
