CME Course Renal Pathology for Nephrologists
May 11th and May 12th, 2012 in Vienna, Austria
Renal biopsies are essential diagnostics tools in both, native kidney diseases and allograft
dysfunction. Biopsy processing and reading is usually provided by a specialised renal pathologist.
The nephrologist should however have at least a basic knowledge of diagnostic features of
renal diseases, be aware of potential differential diagnoses and difficulties encountered in interpreting renal biopsies in
order to fully exploit their diagnostic power.
The Renal Pathology Course for Nephrologists is an event held alternatively in Heidelberg and Vienna. Offering a
combination of virtual and "hands-on" microscopy with introductory lectures, the course addresses topics of interest to
nephrologists and physicians with a special interest in kidney disease. It focuses on special problems of diagnostic
challenges encountered in daily clinical work. This "theme based" approach allows to both provide a broader overview
generally but also to discuss in depth specific diseases.
This year's topics will include:
Chronic Nephropathies/Glomerulopathies (Diabetes mellitus, Amyloidosis, fibrillary GN)
Minimal change lesions und FSGS
Chronic changes of the transplanted Organ - Banff and beyond
Aim of the course is to provide a hands-on experience of renal biopsy diagnostics to participants. Participants will gain
knowledge of diagnostic strategies in renal pathology and the specific
value of various diagnostic tools (special stainings, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy). It is
not intended to provide training in diagnostic histopathology as it would be required for pathologists in this field.
Prior to the microscopy sessions we will offer short introductory talks on the respective topic presented by a clinician and/or
a pathologist. This will also include an introduction to kidney morphology, to biopsy handling, virtual microscopy and how to
operate the slide viewing software.
All pathologists will be present throughout the microscopy sessions in order to answer questions on the cases and provide
help with assessing the slides.
The number of participants is restricted to 40.
Registration fee is € 200. Registration is open from February 13, 2012. For registration please contact
