In the early 1700’s, European settlers

found fertile land and ample water

for farming in the Clarksburg area.

After much work clearing the heavily

forested land, one of the most

important crops the farmers planted

was tobacco. Although it had no food

value, it was important because of its

use as money for purchasing or

bartering for necessary goods such

as cloth or household and farming

implements.
