EL Civics #33 Practice for Task 2 – Job Application
Notes to the TeacherPreparing Students for Assessment Task 2:
Fill out a job application
Students IL-A will complete a written assessment task to fill out an authentic job application using information provided to them. In order to standardize the assessment, students will NOT fill out job applications about themselves for the assessment task, but will complete the form using information about a fictitious person.
The applications and résumés/personal information pages found in the student booklet simulate the written assessment task. Use a variety of grouping strategies for maximum effectiveness. Have students work in pairs, alone, in groups, etc. to complete the practice application activities listed above. Answer keys are provided. You may want to make a few copies of the answer keys and hand out for students to work together to check their work on the applications as writing all the information on a transparency could be time-consuming and a bit boring for students. You may want to make an extra copy of an application for students to fill out with their own information.
A good supplemental lesson would be for students to pick up and bring in real applications from various businesses to study and/or fill out with their own information.
Lesson suggestion: Have students work in pairs or groups to complete practice job application or other related activity. Provide one copy of the answer key to pair/group that finishes first and ask them to check their work. They will then be the “experts” for this activity and will check the work of the next pairs/groups to finish the project. As each student completes the checking, he/she becomes an “expert” and checks the work of another student. This strategy will encourage valuable classroom communication and will make the writing task more interesting to students.
